Protest the national security state on July 4th

A nationwide campaign of protests is being organized for the Independence Day holiday tomorrow against widespread government spying. It is being organized by the coalition Restore the Fourth, where the ‘Fourth’ is a pun on the date as well as the US Constitution’s Fourth Amendment protections against “unreasonable searches and seizures”.

The group held a press conference announcing the event.

Organizers of Restore the Fourth are also planning live protests in dozens of U.S. cities, including New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Houston and Atlanta.

“How long do we expect rational people to accept using terrorism to justify and excuse endless executive and state power?” actor John Cusack said during a press conference announcing the protests. “Why are so many in our government, our press, our intellectual class afraid of an informed public?”

You can find information about the protests in your area here.

This is an awesome idea, I hope it gets a lot of traction and continues into the future. (Unless of course we win and it isn’t necessary in the future.)
