Triumph the Insult Dog after the final debate

I am not generally a fan of insult humor of the kind made famous by Don Rickles, which consists of rude put downs of the other person. I tend to prefer the more subtle forms.

But the recurrent character Triumph the Insult Comic Dog on Conan O’Brien’s show is so over the top that it is actually a parody of the form. Here he is in the spin-room after the third presidential debate.

“I saw your ratings. I used an electron microscope.” Funniest joke ever.

Anyone know why that town is called “Boca Raton”? It means “mouse mouth” in Spanish. Does the name date back to the age of Spanish exploration? Does it refer to two sand bars that resemble the teeth of a mouse? Was the town attacked by a horde of cottonrats, S. hispidus, in its early days?

I understood it to mean rat’s mouth.

There were outcrop reefs in the anchorage that wore away the anchor lines as the boats shifted with the wind, setting the boats adrift. The ends of the lines looked gnawed, like they’d been chewed by a rat.

The meaning of the name Boca Raton has always aroused curiosity. Many people wrongly assume the name is simply Rat’s Mouth. The Spanish word boca, or mouth, often describes an inlet, while raton means literally, mouse. The term Boca de Ratones or Boca Ratones, was a navigational referring to a rocky or jagged inlet, but the original location of Boca de Ratones was Biscayne Bay near present day Miami Beach, according to eighteenth century maps. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, the term was mistakenly applied to the current Lake Boca Raton, whose inlet was closed throughout most of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The “s” and later the “e” were dropped from this title by the 1920s, yet the correct pronunciation remains Rah-tone.

Hmmm? Mitt “Boca Raton” Romney. Paul “Boca Raton” Ryan. I guess that works. They keep wanting to chew through the social programs saftey net and set a lot of poor and middle class adrift.
