The curious situation of Muslim Republicans

It is a puzzle why people would want to join organizations that seem to actively work against their interests. Jason Jones of The Daily Show explores the weird logic used by those Muslims who want to join the Republican party and by the Republicans who are trying to keep them out.

The Republican Party works against the best interests of many of its members. Furthermore, its propaganda arm has convinced those members that they want their best interests ignored.

Agreed when it comes to, say, blue collar workers. Musilms seems like a different case, though. I sense much more of a “Keep Out” aura then a “We’re the best for you”,, as with gays. In both cases, a hypothetical Average Conservative Republican would say “You should stop being that, and change to being Christian/straight.”

Fixed that for you. Including the sub-millionaire ones, the female ones, the ones who work for a living, the older ones, the ill ones, and pretty much every non-Mitt-Romney one.

Beyond the greater social conservatism of Muslim-Americans, which made the Republican Party a better fit, it seemed that, at one time, the solidly Democratic nature of American Jewish vote helped the Republican Party become the default party for Arab and Muslim vote, despite the racism and xenophobia of the GOP.

Assuming that dynamic is or was true, I wonder how the ever-increasingly cozy nature of the Republican Party to ‘Millennially’-motivated pro-Israel American evangelicals has effected this dynamic?

Great post, Mano. I usually find Jason Jones a bit annoying, but his questions were spot on! These people are so silly, I was fully expecting to find my leg being pulled. But no … reality is always weirder.
