What do atheists do in a crisis?

David Silverman, president of American Atheists, was brought on to some Fox news show to address this question in the context of hurricane Irene. His advice to everyone: Act like atheists and prepare, without wasting your time appealing to some deity to save you.

In the process he showed up the host and one other guest as total idiots.

Way to go, David!

Thanks a lot. I think I just lost 20 points off my IQ listening to those three numbskulls. 😉 Mr. Silverman is an admirably patient and persistent man.

Though it was very interesting to hear the clowns, with evident embarrassment, disclaiming the belief preached by their own churches in an all-knowing, all-powerful Sky Daddy, and describing prayer as merely a kind of auto-psychotherapy. I was surprised and heartened to see Fox News drones appearing to be ashamed to admit publicly to anything resembling traditional Christian beliefs. As you never tire of saying, we ARE making progress.

    Steve,

I too was struck by how reluctant they were to ascribe any power at all to god and merely offer the idea of god as a source of comfort. They really do seem to be embarrassed by being associated with the traditional view of god and well on their way to being what I call ‘religious atheists’.

It’s no fault of our blogger, but that crappy Murdoch website crashed my browser. They’re as lousy at web design as they are at “news”.

It amazes me that so often you see/read/hear about people in peril who previously were not religious that learn to pray very quickly in the time of peril.

To me it is like when the time comes they know deep down their is a God and they very quickly go looking for him.

What amazes me is that so many people don’t know the difference between “their” and “there”. I suspect there is a strong correlation between such illiteracy and a propensity to post hackneyed relgiose tripe on blogs where it’s sure to be an object of derision.
