Frrolfe, I’m guessing those were your actual attempts at humor. Have you tried telling those to people in face to face conversations? If so, did not the blank looks and the quick changes of subject give you any kind of clue?

I think that my joke, which was specifically aimed at the IRA, a murderous bunch of thugs (not that the UDA were any better, or the army much better), is a perfectly reasonable humorous response to terror. It’s just like the warning signs we used to have on the Tube warning about unattended packages and what to do with them (or what noty to do with them) that were commonly and unofficially edited to be warnings about unattended Irishmen.

First of all, richardelguru, my remark was not solely aimed at you. However, you did preface the joke with “And if we are swapping bad Irish jokes:” so I think it’s reasonable to conclude it was about Irishness – the IRA angle is just to make the joke work. In any event, however you slice it, these kinds of jokes are racist and I don’t think they should be doing the rounds at FtB.
