MRFF Advisory Board Member Glen Doherty Among Those Killed in Libya Attack

I have some extremely sad news to report today.

One of our MRFF Advisory Board members, former Navy SEAL Glen Doherty, was among the three others killed at the consulate in Libya along with Ambassador Chris Stevens.

From Mikey:

“He confirmed for me how deeply entrenched fundamentalist Christianity is in the DoD Spec Ops [Department of Defense Special Operations] world of the SEALs, Green Berets, Delta Force, Army Rangers USAF … and DoD security contractors like the former Blackwater,” Weinstein said in an email to The Huffington Post. Doherty “helped me on many MRFF client cases behind the scenes to facilitate assistance to armed forces members abused horribly by fundamentalist Christian proselytizing.”

His efforts to prevent his country from turning into a theocratic mob like the one that killed him are appreciated.

R.I.P. Glen Doherty, who fought and now has died fighting against religious bigotry. I don’t know if it is appropriate to call him a martyr, but it is certainly appropriate in a secular sense.

My heart and thought go out to his friends, family, and MRFF at this time. @~^~~~~

btw- for the immediate future, when I get one of those ‘what harm does religion do’ arguments?

    Here.

Zinc has it right. Kudos to Mr. Doherty, and much sadness to hear of his passing at the hands of such primitive screwheads.

This is terrible. His family and friends just be devastated. I hope that, in time, they can take some comfort in knowing Glen made the world a little better place in his shirt life. Adios amigo.

My condolences as well, and yes, Zinc Avenger brings it clear.

It’s surprising to me that for a tragedy happening so far away, involving so few Americans, there are so many links back home. A local acquaintance of mine knew another of the four dead; apparently one of them was quite well-known in an online gaming community.

    There are no distant tragedies.

Respect. Also surprised that this is the first mention of his untimely demise that I’ve seen in the atheism community. I think he deserves some more recognition.

As I watched a bit of the service that was held today, and heard the blatantly xtian remarks, I couldn’t help but think how offended Glen would have been.
I feel for his loved ones. I wish that their (hopefully) secular funeral for him could be also televised.

“We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here.”

Re #20 by magistramarla, I saw the same thing and had the same thoughts. Very hard to watch.

Today, Mitt Romney politicized Glen’s death on the stump. It was disgusting. Glen’s family complained to the Romney campaign; we’ll see.
