According to the propaganda, Ol’ Yahweh is a sadistic, narcissistic bully with the emotional maturity of a spoiled six year old. He kills people just because he can. The song just recognizes this point.
The beauty of this song is that if you don’t like any of the existing verses, there’s enough material in the O.T. to write dozens of new ones.
Old Elisha spread God’s word,
And made sure the people heard.
And they listened, and believed, and bowed their heads.
But when childen playing games
Called him disrespectful names,
God sent bears to rip the kids to bloody shreads.
“I burn down your cities–how blind you must be
I take from you your children and you say how blessed are we
You must all be crazy to put your faith in me
That’s why I love mankind
You really need me
That’s why I love mankind”
–Randy Newman, “God’s Song (That’s Why I Love Mankind)”

Yeah this one has been on my favorites list for a while. My son claims it is his theme song. It’s so perfectly the bluegrass-flavored hymn.

That was great. I had heard it before but it’s been awhile. That is sounds just like an old gospel sing hymn makes it even better.
