Planetary scientist Carolyn Porco fires a ‘space doodoo pistol’ at Saturn

Carolyn Porco is the leader of the Cassini imaging team. She has discovered a damned Death Star orbiting Saturn.

Cassini discovers death star orbiting saturnvia: Carolyn Porco at CICLIPS

The evil GALACTIC EMPIRE has inserted its Death Star among the moons of a giant ringed world orbiting a middle-aged star. Alarm spreads among the fearful EARTHLINGS on a small nearby planet: what has brought the Empire to this galactic sector, to this Sun?

Intercepting sinister electromagnetic bursts, and suspicious of evil intent, the EARTHLINGS dispatch a spacefaring vehicle with powerful detectors to find out…

Co-founder of reddit, Aaron Swartz, hanged himself

sad reddit alienCo-founder of Reddit, Aaron Swartz, hanged himself. He was many things, a hacker, a free information activist, a tech guru. The 26 year old was soon to be charged for what amounts to ‘checking out millions of library books’ from JSTOR. The federal case was on shaky legal footing, but could have netted him decades in prison.

JSTOR, did not pursue him in civil court.

via: The Washington Post

JSTOR did not press charges once it reclaimed the articles from Swartz, and some legal experts considered the case unfounded, saying that MIT allows guests access to the articles and Swartz, a fellow at Harvard’s Safra Center for Ethics, was a guest.

Criticizing the government’s actions in the pending prosecution, Harvard law professor and Safra Center faculty director Lawrence Lessig called himself a friend of Swartz’s and wrote Saturday that “we need a better sense of justice. … The question this government needs to answer is why it was so necessary that Aaron Swartz be labeled a ‘felon.’”

JSTOR announced this week that it would make “more than 4.5 million articles” publicly available for free.

Military members, does your PX / BX sell these awful items?

I’ve been getting reports of questionable items available at Post Exchange / Base Exchange stores on military bases. We’ve had mixed luck in the past, for various reasons. What we’re looking for are certain books way beyond the standard Bible-variants (365-day, various translations, etc.)

Specifically, if you see anything from David Barton on a military base, such as The Jefferson Lies, contact me immediately. Take pictures if possible, and let me know where and when in your message.

David Barton the Jefferson Lies fixed: pinocchio liar nose and hat

Also, keep an eye out for clothing lines that carry evangelical messages. I’ve got some very specific reports in from Texas bases, and I want to see if it’s systemic. T-shirts that simply have chaplain-related mottos are generally not what I’m talking about (though extreme messages should be documented and sent to me ASAP.)

Watch out for amateurish banners for questionable religious activities of all stripes. These advertisements are not supposed to be up at a PX/BX: Read the rest of this entry »

Americans United calls Marine Corps out for discrimination against atheists

“Evasive Action.” It’s more than just a clever play on words by Americans United blogger Simon Brown. It’s also an accurate summary of the situation at California Marine Corps base, Camp Pendleton. They’re putting a tremendous amount of time, personnel, and other government resources to support massive evangelical concerts and other events. This is only legal *if* they promise to provide the same support to all other groups. Camp Pendleton rejected our atheist-themed concert for laughable reasons.

Brown’s article explains:

Americans United for the Separation of Church and State logo

Via‘Evasive Action: Is A Marine Base Discriminating Against Atheists?’

…the U.S. Marine base outside San Diego recently denied a request to host the second-ever atheist festival on a military base even though religious groups have been given base access.

Griffith said in a blog post that Camp Pendleton rejected the festival on several grounds, citing: “too expensive,” “too little manpower,” “all-day rally” and “8,000 attendees.”

American Atheists fired back, noting that the group would cover the same portion of the costs as previous groups had, that the event would be a concert with speakers rather than an “all-day rally” and that Camp Pendleton has accommodated events in the past with more than 10,000 attendees.

Curiously, those in charge of the base haven’t shown the same concerns about events put on at Camp Pendleton by Armor of Light, the military wing of the evangelical Christian Calvary Chapel. The California based group, which has been embroiled in child sex abuse scandals, has held events at the base for more than a decade, including a concert for 15,000 people in 2009.

It’s pretty remarkable that this is still happening given that a nearly identical situation came up at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, eventually leading to the first-ever atheist festival held at a military base, thanks to some assistance from Americans United.

Damn right they supported us last time around! We were showered with support from AU leaders such as Ayesha Khan, Rob Boston, and AU President Barry Lynn. Regarding the first festival at Fort Bragg, this part of the article is definitely not a stretch (emphasis mine): Read the rest of this entry »

Atheist festival resubmits after Marine Corps rejection

We were extremely disappointed that the second ever atheist festival on a military base was recently rejected by Camp Pendleton. They continue to provide massive support to a single religious sect, the controversial Calvary Chapel and its military arm, ‘Armor of Light’ (AoL). Camp Pendleton is a large Marine Corps base near San Diego, California. The area is also home to the 1000+ churches-strong Calvary Chapel headquarters.

The Marine Corps mailed the rejection letter to American Atheists headquarters in New Jersey. Perhaps fittingly, the letter seemed so nonsensical that it had to be rescued from the garbage.

We are pleased to announce that we have now mitigated all of the concerns that Camp Pendleton cited in their rejection letter.

Chaplains hand out anti-gay, anti-jewish ‘Manga Messiah’ hate comic

Talk2Action has picked up the story of the awful ‘Manga Messiah’ comics that are being handed out to deployed soldiers. They’re also used in Uganda to brainwash kids against Jews, gays, and witches.

Manga Jesus vs David Silverman

via Talk2Action:

The publisher claims that millions of copies of Manga Messiah have been distributed in countries around the globe, from Uganda to Guatemala to Great Britain. And, according to … Justin Griffith, who also serves as the Military Director for American Atheists, Manga Messiah has been distributed by United States military chaplains.

To an almost complete lack of media scrutiny, the Japanese manga-style comic book Manga Messiah seems to have joined Hitler’s Mein Kampf, as one of the most internationally prolific forms of anti-Jewish propaganda in history.

I first wrote about Manga Messiah after receiving my copy while on my last deployment. I was truly shocked when I did more research. I received it as if it was just another chaplain tract, and in fact was bundled with a bunch of standard issue pamphlets. Just how many got distributed? Are they still distributing them in foreign countries?

Bruce Wilson‘s piece at Talk2Action’s is lengthy and well-sourced. I didn’t even pick up on every angle as I read my copy. For instance, Wilson writes about the portrayal of Judas as a ‘gay banker’:

In the Manga Messiah depiction of Judas he is drawn as effeminate, with an early 1980s Boy George-style haircut, a flowing head scarf, and earrings: a heavy handed suggestion that Judas might be gay. So, in the Manga Messiah version of the passion play, Judas is a gay banker or money-manager, and perhaps a violent revolutionary killer (the Sicarii carried out their assassinations with concealed daggers), who betrays Jesus with a homoerotic kiss.

Commenting on the comic, founder of the nationally influential LGBTQ rights group Truth Wins Out Wayne Besen, who is both homosexual and Jewish, stated,

“This is a cartoon with dark connotations that blends historic homophobia and anti-semitism to mold impressionable young minds to think with malice.”While Jesus and his apostles are drawn Manga style, with tiny, stylized noses, and enormous eyes, the Jewish rabbis in the comic often depicted differently – they are shown with sallow, yellowish complexions or with large noses, attacking Jesus and angrily clamoring for his death.

Read the whole thing over at Talk2Action, and share it for great justice!

Armor of Light / Camp Pendleton just don’t have the muscle

Armor of Light is a ministry that currently gets a lot of special treatment on the USMC base, Camp Pendleton (near San Diego). They recently posted this ridiculous picture on one of their facebook walls.

You might need to see this one embiggened.

Marine Corps base rejects atheist festival

Camp Pendleton’s decision to reject our proposal violates federal ethics regulations. This is certainly a huge step in the wrong direction. We’re still willing to work with officials before the San Diego area Marine Corps base is entrenched in a legal battle they can’t possibly win.

We’ve received mixed signals from Camp Pendleton in trying to organize Rock Beyond Belief 2. Initially, they were on board with treating us with equality. We are simply demanding the same access, treatment, and support as the Armor of Light ministry has received for over a decade. They’ve put on numerous massive evangelical festivals featuring rock bands and speakers, all intent on explaining why service members (and their families) need to drop their current religious preference and become born again Christians.

Then late last year something abruptly changed over at the Armor of Light website. They ‘went dark’, regarding public announcements of their events featuring command endorsement, sponsorship, or access to military bases. This was the entirety of their mission, so now they’ve got absolutely nothing to post to their ‘upcoming events’ calendar.

Here is a screenshot from this morning, 5 January 2013.

Armor of Light's calendar of events says: October TBA for Camp Pendleton

Right around the same time AoL went dark, American Atheists’ Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) request had been processed. Look at the highlighted portions of this document [pdf] to see what was missing out of the information we requested. Half of what they did send us was improperly redacted beyond legibility. Even then, the contents constituted a tiny fraction of what we asked. No explanation was given.

Previously, the apparent full-stop in the special treatment for Armor of Light looked like a positive development. However, a few weeks ago, AoL and Camp Pendleton collaborated on a medium-sized event. Though not a full-blown concert, it had all the same hallmarks of the event we’re trying to put on.

USMC 511 Camp Pendleton Armor of Light

It featured a live music performance from at least one group (using relatively expensive pro-gear). There was face-painting, multiple ‘bounce houses’, balloon animals, and other activities aimed at children. There was food, and a very large building’s worth of seating arrangements (typically rented). Adults and kids sparred in padded sumo wrestler suits. This happened on Camp Pendleton with the full endorsement of a large tenant unit, and the use of government facilities, personnel, and equipment.

Ian Cherry, the same Camp Pendleton official who assured us equal treatment back in May, recently informed American Atheists that RBB2 couldn’t be supported. The reasons he gave were ridiculous, and we’re considering legal action shortly. The crux of their argument is that it would be ‘too costly’, despite the fact that American Atheists was ready and willing to pay for the event. Mr. Cherry also cited one other obstacle – they don’t have the manpower. It’s odd that Camp Pendleton has the manpower only when Armor of Light events are concerned.

They are bluffing and treating us like we’re idiots, but we aren’t just going away. Here’s why: what they are saying is ILLEGAL. These regulations couldn’t possibly be more clear: Read the rest of this entry »
