Atheists are brave in war but not in life

While you are praying

According to some

So sometimes I will listen to talk radio on the AM stations. You know, the ones that play Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, and the always comical Glen Beck. I don’t actually listen to those shows most of the time because I feel like my brain is melting…but I do listen to some of the local shows. The local AM shows dial down the rhetoric and are sometimes quite informative…if not a bit too conservative for my tastes.

Regardless I was listening to a station and they were talking about the Oklahoma storm. The DJ, a guy named Sully, basically stated that because the storm was bad that everybody was crying to God or some such BS. He ended his little rant by saying there’s “No Atheists in Foxholes.” Obviously I was more than a little perturbed by his blurb so I decided to send him an email

>> Dear Sully,
>>
>> I’m an active duty Marine stationed in Camp Pendleton. I know you
>> may not understand where I’m coming from and that’s okay (it’s why
>> I’m writing you). You stated that there are “no atheists in
>> foxholes” and it was rather insulting. You were talking about
>> something that the President said, which is something I’m not even
>> going to get involved in, but it came around to you to speak ill of
>> atheists.
>>
>> I know some atheists that were IN the storm and are now volunteering
>> their time, money, food, and clothes helping those ravaged by the
>> storm. I also have a friend who is a Marine and a war vet who was
>> living there. I think this needs to come above religious bickering.
>>
>> There are MANY atheists who rush into life-threatening situations
>> and who serve in the military today. I would ask you to reevaluate
>> what you stated.
>>
>> Very Respectfully
>> Paul Loebe
>> Assistant Military Director, Marine Liaison
>> American Atheists, Inc.
>> Camp Pendleton, CA
>>
>>
>> *Although I am an active duty Marine Sergeant my views do not
>> reflect the views of the Department of Defense, U.S. Marine Corps,
>> or any affiliated branches.*

I honestly didn’t expect to hear back from the guy but alas he did respond:

> Dear Sergeant Loebe:
>
> First of all, thank you for your service and may God bless you and
> your family for your service to protect pussies like me!
>
> Second, what I said was a figure of speech, not a comment on atheists
> who serve.
>
> I.e, When something HORRIBLE happens to someone, say their kid is
> kidnapped, even the atheist will utter, “Please God – NO!” Hence,
> there is no atheist in the veritable “foxhole.”
>
> Thanks for taking the time to write and THANKS FOR LISTENING!
>
> Love your show,
>
> SULLY

I wrote him back stating that there is absolutely no difference between a VERITABLE foxhole and the real thing. I lost the email because it got sent from my phone so I can’t actually repost the contents. I also stated that foxholes are for hiding and Marines build fighting holes…because well –>Marines don’t hide. *wink* Sorry, Army brethren!

Disregard for disregard

So what I get out of all this is that even though I might be brave enough to run into a hail of bullets I’m not brave enough to face the stressors of everyday life without running to god. Thanks for the ultimate disregard! Well, folks there you have it.

Maybe he doesn’t know what ‘veritable’ means. I know Merriam-Webster defines it as : being in fact the thing named and not false, unreal, or imaginary —often used to stress the aptness of a metaphor<a veritable mountain of references>

Don’t worry atheists we can handle the stress of dying in a real foxhole but when it’s metaphorical and applied to everyday life we succumb to the pressures of acknowledging the invisible sky bully. I’m glad I’m in such good company. At least I know when the shit hits the fan and we’re all about to die I’ll be with such brave compatriots. I just hope I don’t get any real-world problems in the meantime.

Blah! Another pointless death…

In Britain today…

If you haven’t heard about the brutal assault taking the life of a British soldier it is saddening and appalling. I didn’t plan on writing a post like this and I don’t have much input. It’s another ideological religious crusade taking the life of a service member. It matters not what religion was involved to me…any one is equally as bad as the other.

After the Boston bombings and now this on the international headlines I begin to think this is more than mere coincidence. It’s something I anticipated happening many years ago, actually. Big attacks will never work with our intelligence and information network. It seems the extremists may be coming to the same conclusions.

al-Qaeda has now told Muslims in the West who are sympathetic to their cause to instead launch small-scale attacks, without talking to others, “maybe do it alone, or with another friend; get a knife, get a machete.

A loss for words…

I don’t really have much else to say.

It really sucks that this happened at all….let alone to some random vet who was walking the streets.

I don’t have much inspiration tonight….

Oklahoma Atheists need Your Help! *final update*

Olka

The Oklahoma Atheists are hurting…

…and so are the Christians, the Muslims, the Wiccans, the Deists, and well…all the humans! I’m not gonna embellish too much on this post as I just want to get it out there. I contacted the head of the Oklahoma Atheists, Red McCall, when he asked for help on Facebook. There are lots of people affected by this tragedy. Many are homeless, without shelter, and have lost loved ones.

Let’s donate whatever we can to help; whether it be building supplies, money, food, impromptu shelters, or even our time the smallest bit will make a difference!

Atheists helping those in need:

Here are a list of organizations you can donate to that are working directly with Red:

Or you can go directly to the Oklahoma Atheists webpage (linked above and here as well) and donate directly to them. Share the info and get the word out! Let’s help those in need.

I will update this as I get more information.

-Paul

*update 1*

—>Here’s a food bank in the local area. They are going to need funds<—

*update 2*

–>The Marine Battery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma is collecting food, water, clothes and anything for the relief effort.

They are located at Building 912 (Marine Barracks Battery) on base. If anyone lives in or around Lawton, Oklahoma and wants to donate more than money please start there! <–

*update 3*

In less than 24 hours people have donated OVER $25,000 to these four atheist/humanist organizations! That is epic! You totally rock! I know it was a helluva lot more people than just read this blog since I only get between 1,000-3,000 people on here while I’m blogging on a regular basis (sometimes more or less — it ebbs and flows) so it was many many atheists who have decided to act for the better good.

DON’T Stop Now! If you are cash strapped (like me or most of America) then please give when you can. It may sound like a lot of money but a single destroyed house still costs more than everything that’s been collected today. And LOTS of homes were destroyed.

Thanks all!

I will continue to blog about other things and give you another update at some point in the future for anything the Oklahomans may need.

What I’ve been up to

Deployment

This last year has had its ups and downs for me and I’ve gone through quite a bit. I traveled to multiple different countries throughout the Western Pacific and the Middle East. Rock Beyond Belief secured a promise from the Marines to cease religious proselytization violations. I made new friends and severed some old relationships. And now I’m back in the United States of America.

Here’s a list of some stuff that’s gone on in the last year:

  •  I traveled to 7 different countries and ate some awesome and awful food
  • I started an ‘Atheists and Freethinkers Group’ aboard the USS Green Bay
  • I shot lots of guns
  • I got to clean up the mess the Navy Seals made when they got to do cool stuff and I didn’t
  • I walked A LOT… foot patrols suck and if you’ve done it, you know!
  • I became an expert at busting rust
  • I went without internet for months at a time
  • I thought Arnold had died because the internet was down when he published his book
    ^          ^          ^             ^              ^                 ^             ^             ^       ^
My platoon sergeant played a horrible prank on us. We were very upset over the loss of the Arnie and even more so when we found out it was a bad joke.
  • Had a sudden rush where I completely remembered all the Arabic I had forgotten over the years. We got lost walking through the Saudi desert on a patrol at night and the worrying made me suddenly fluent in Arabic again…that was interesting.
  • I got to help secure a binding promise from the Marines to stop throwing sectarian concerts.
  • And “Oh Yeah!”….

I’m a combat seamstress!

All in All

It was still a miserable deployment. Prior to deploying I was given a choice to make. I had to stop any association with Rock Beyond Belief or I could continue with my activism efforts but I would be dropped from the deployment.

I distinctly remember the day when I was handed this order. We were on ship for part of the workup last August and I was pulled into the Captain’s office. All the officers were in there as I sat down and he told me I had to make this choice. I was told before we left the ship I had to inform him what I would do. It’s not as bad as it all seems when it came to them putting me in that position, however.

All but one of my officers were devout believers but they are not the warped twisted fundamentalists that are trying to subvert the military with Christian dominionism. My officers actually had to fight their higher-ups to keep me in the unit. I was supposed to be dropped immediately but I am fortunate to have had good people (yes!–> good people of faith) in my corner. That other one officer…he’s a fellow atheist – he was really supportive of my activist efforts.

The decision seemed glaringly obvious to me. I had to deploy with my Marines. I was extremely upset that I was put in that position. As a matter of fact it was quite the opposite of what the Army attempted to do with Justin for the first Rock Beyond Belief. As soon as he began his efforts they MADE him deploy in an attempt to stop him. Since that didn’t work I’m guessing a lesson was passed on from one branch to another with me…

I feel like I’ve been sleeping for 9 monthsphoto-1

It’s been thoroughly upsetting to have not been involved in the activist community. So much has happened in the last year that I am still catching up on.

I have kept up a regular quarterly column in the American Atheists Magazine. ;) I was only ordered not to be active with Rock Beyond Belief. I can read between the lines!

I also could not have blogged had I been allowed to though. The internet aboard ship worked about as well as Michael Behe’s irreducible complexity hypothesis. Well, okay…it worked better than that. But it was pretty damn slow!!!

I’m gearing up

I wrote a blog a few weeks ago and I suppose it was just a tease for those of you that enjoy reading what I have to say. I’ve got more goals that will be accomplished and I’m going to lay them out over the next few weeks. I just got back from the deployment and I’m spending time with the wife and dogs so once I get some quality family time in I’ll get this blog active again.

Camp Pendleton Cornered Into Ceasing All Large Religious Events After a Decade of Violations!

It is not feasible to announce the date for this event.

Say WHAAAT!?!

When I first contacted Justin about Rock Beyond Belief 2 my primary motivation was to meet other foxhole atheists. I can honestly say there are more of us out there than the numbers truly reveal! Most of us are just content to live and let live. Perhaps, in that, I am the exception to the rule.

I’ve always been the type of guy to challenge the status quo when I knew it was wrong, to stand up for the little guy, and to push back when I saw a bully on the rampage. I never thought I would use those skills on anything of this magnitude, however.

Justin was hesitant about doing another event (but eventually relented). His reasoning for this was and is sound. The goal, intent, and aim of Rock Beyond Belief wasn’t about forcing them to cower to our demands for a concert, but rather to ensure that they upheld the Constitutional mandate of not promoting one religion over all others. That has been accomplished!

tHIS IS NOT A wIN?

wrong

I know what some of you must be thinking; “We lost…”—————————>

The fundamentalists at Camp Pendleton may not realize it yet but we’ve actually secured a legally binding promise to never throw any more sectarian concerts of this magnitude again!

The Marine Corps Community Services final letter to us indicated that no more religious concerts of that size would be conducted aboard MCB Camp Pendleton! Here is where we must stay the course.

We have secured this in writing, however we all know that sometimes these evangelical fundamentalists “forget” what promises they have made; ya know…like swearing an oath to our godless Constitution outranks any promises made to god!

We must be vigilant to ensure they keep this promise. If ever they fail to uphold their end of the bargain then we will hold them accountable. From what I’ve seen of the track record of the evangelicals….we’ve got a pretty good shot at putting on a show or winning a court battle.

What about all the other Christian events…?

When I conducted the research into the heavy indoctrination by Calvary Chapel and the Marine Corps base I found tons of events. We submitted the FOIA request and our initial request for RBB2. The concert was denied and we received a poor response for our FOIA. We did garner enough information to ascertain the size, location, and official support those events received. With that in hand we moved forward to put together a second request for an event.

Months went by again before we received a second response. If you’ll notice it clearly states “It is worth noting that using government assets to support official command programs is different than using government assets to support non-federal entities.” This opens the door for all local secular groups to sponsor and support individual commands.
(The referenced DOD R 5500.7-R is the same regulation we cited for reasons that the event must go on.)

Warning!

Between myself and Justin, neither of us have had the time to respond or react to this. I am still deployed and currently banned from involvement in the event while Justin is moving across the country and transitioning into his recruiting position.

WHAT ABOUT ALL THE FOXHOLE ATHEISTS?!?

Let’s not forget who this is for. It’s for these people:

These are just but a few of the public examples people have displayed on this blog. I have received emails, phone calls, and letters from active duty, reservists, and veterans expressing their thanks and interest. The ultimate goal of all this isn’t just a one-time concert. It’s a lasting community.

The Marine Corps has promised to NEVER have big events that are religious in nature. I’m fine with that. But it doesn’t meet the needs of the non-believing service members. Before I began in activism it was pretty lonely not being able to meet with people of the same mindset. It’s hard not having the ability to speak up to try and find people that are skeptical and open-minded. And quite honestly, most of us don’t want to speak up. We just want to be able to live and let live. We want to not be pushed into accepting religion nor be ridiculed for not agreeing.

I’m more than willing to accept criticism and ridicule from anyone and everyone on behalf of those non-believing service members, their spouses, and their families. I’ll speak up and take the heat because I know that the quiet ones are still searching for that community. The fact is most service members and their family members aren’t even aware that a secular community exists right around the corner from where they live! So this is where I need you to come in and help…

San_Diego_COR_Mast

I need local support!

Since the presence of Calvary Chapel isn’t going to go away onboard Camp Pendleton anytime soon we will have to ensure they aren’t providing ONLY Christian services services of a sectarian nature. When these events are held (especially family days) they are, more often than not, mandatory. I know because I’ve had to attend my fair share. As long as there is not an attempt at indoctrination at these events I am okay with them. In fact I support them! The Marines on Pendleton work extremely hard all year round and it is nice to know that the local community cares. When the line between support for service and religious indoctrination is crossed, however, that is where I will speak up.

Deny Foxhole Atheists Equal Treatment - Challenge Accepted (american atheists)The San Diego Coalition of Reason has been supportive of my efforts to put on RBB2 since day 1. They have also been trying to find a way to get on base to offer a sense of community to the non-believers for YEARS! They have been working with the Chaplaincy aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar for quite some time and are now making headway. Now that we have garnered the attention of MCCS, Camp Pendleton, HQ Marine Corps, and Miramar it is time for us to show our support for the troops!

By coordinating together with all the different freethought groups in the Southern California area we can pool our resources and offer the same level of support for the Marines and Sailors on the West Coast. These organizations have been trying to accomplish this for years and now, with our second response from MCB Camp Pendleton, they will be able to meet those needs.

IN THE FUTURE…

I’ve had many people approach me about doing an event of this magnitude regardless of whether or not we gain the support of MCCS and the Marine Corps. I’ve adamantly and continually said “no.” This was an effort to demand equal treatment under the law. It does not mean, however, that I am opposed to having a similar event in the future.

You haven’t heard the last from me about such an event taking place! So until that time let’s help those Marines and Sailors aboard Pendleton know that they are supported. I can’t wait to get back from this deployment and hope all is well back stateside!

If you’re in a local unit; be it spouse, family member, or active duty and want to have us sponsor YOUR unit or command email me [email protected] I will be working in coordination with the local freethought agencies.

To keep you occupied in the meantime here’s a delightful picture of me drinking coffee with Clint Eastwood and the President

Infographic, Ya Blew It

My soldiers say really awful ‘science facts’ from time to time. More often than not, it comes from these shitty infographics on Facebook.

from raw for beauty, shitty infogrpahic about unusual uses for lemon juice

How do I hate thee? Let me count the ways…

  1. These all the same thing: “Spot buster”, “Stain remover”, “Removes stains”, “Glass cleaner”, “Toilet cleaner”
  2. Plausible, citation would be helpful: “Sore throat soother”,”Food preservative”, “Fingernail brightener”, “Dry mouth cure”, “Hair highlighter”
  3. Doubtful, citation needed: “Dandruff”, “Lighten age spots and freckles”, “Metabolism booster”, “Hiccups”,
  4. Misleading or Untrue:
“Insect Deterrent” (There are insects that love lemons, and some species of ants that feed off of those bugs waste.) “Deodorant / odor destroyer” (Plausible / acceptable: scent masking, flavoring, etc.)
  5. Dangerous to be telling people, especially in lieu of medical advice: “morning sickness”, “breast cancer (!)”, “sinusitis”, “warts”, “kidney care (?)”

But the #1 thing I have to ask is…

Why are there so many *limes* in the infographic about lemon juice? Read the rest of this entry »

Top 30 terrible comments about atheist soldiers on FoxNews.com

Illegal modifications to a military chapel in Afghanistan were abruptly reversed thanks to American Atheists. They had installed the only known church steeple in Afghanistan, and cut giant crosses into the doors of the ‘religiously neutral’ building. At night, light would emit from the crosses on the doors, shining like a miniature searchlight.

Yesterday, Fox News Todd Starnes wrote an article that piggybacked the excellent NBC coverage that broke the story. These comments were all posted at Fox News in the last 24 hours. In no particular order…

Check in from the Middle East

So back in the States…

I’ve been gone for quite a while and am always flabbergasted at the ridiculous level of nonsense that the American News Media focuses on. Since I’ve been gone President Obama was reelected, women can serve in combat roles, taxes have been raised on the wealthy, we are coming to terms with our government debt, far too many people have been harmed by gun violence, thousands of innocent civilians are killed by American drones, and do you know what I see on the news for hours on end:

Beyonce lip syncing?! That dominated the news for HOURS. Wow…just wow… who cares?

Meanwhile in other parts of the world…

I’ve been pretty busy bouncing around to different parts of the world walking, running, hiking, shooting, eating MRE’s, and sleeping in the dirt. Occasionally I do get a nice meal on ship and I’ve even gotten the chaplaincy to work with me in giving me access to the chapel for all the atheists and freethinkers to meet at.

Honestly, the chaplaincy within this command have been very supportive of my efforts to meet with other freethinkers and I’ve got nothing but good things to say about them. We get to meet weekly and more often than not we end up spending half the week meeting up together outside of the meetings as it is.

Back on the West Coast…

Rock Beyond Belief 2 is rearing up for a fight from what I hear. I’m actually not allowed to be a part of it and I think I’m not supposed to say that but I’m beyond the point of caring. I was originally told I could deploy and have ZERO to do with the event or I could get dropped into a non-deployable status and do the event—for those of you who don’t know that’s pretty much a backhanded career-killer in the Marine Corps. They gave me the option to either sacrifice my career and do the concert or give up my religious rights and do my job…all within an entirely legal loophole. In the Corps non-deployable=bad Marine.

So I juked. I tossed the ball back over to Justin, Chris, and the team I built up and I’ve been floating around the middle east and running through the desert occasionally. I’m not actively involved with the event as it is but since I am friends with Justin….well friends don’t let friends stay uninformed. I’m looking forward to being back in a few short months and we’ll see if this event unfolds into Rock Beyond Belief the concert or Rock Beyond Belief the lawsuit. Who knows?

u mad Sarah Palin?

Achievement unlocked: I have pissed off Sarah Palin.

To answer her question, America is succumbing to regulations that have been in place for decades. They are grounded in the US constitution, so I suppose America is succumbing to that too. Perhaps I should break it down barney style.

Here is the church.

Afghanistan chapel doors featuring illegal Christian crosses FOB Orgun-E AA

And here is the steeple.

Afghanistan chapel on us military FOB Orgun-E with illegal christian steeple

And here is the regulation that protects ‘We the people…’

AR 165-1 12-3 k. Symbols. The chapel environment will be religiously neutral when the facility is not being used for scheduled worship. Portable religious symbols, icons, or statues may be used within a chapel during times of religious worship. Symbols are to be moved or covered when not in use during services. Distinctive religious symbols, such as crosses, crucifixes, the Star of David, Menorah, and other religious symbols will not be affixed or displayed permanently on the chapel interior, exterior, or grounds. Permanent or fixed chapel furnishings, such as the altar, pulpit, lectern, or communion rail will be devoid of distinctive religious symbols.

That was quite a treat to see pop up in my twitter feed.

US Military will not be building churches in Afghanistan

American Atheists just pulled off a huge win in Afghanistan. This is illegal:

Afghanistan chapel on us military FOB Orgun-E with illegal christian steepleAfghanistan chapel doors featuring illegal Christian crosses FOB Orgun-E AA

Kari Huus at NBC News reports:

U.S. military commanders in Afghanistan on Thursday ordered the removal of a steeple and crucifix erected over a remote American base in the Muslim country after a soldier deployed there noted that the symbols violated Army regulations, and could reinforce suspicions that the United States is fighting a holy war.

It is unclear how long ago the Christian symbols at the chapel at Forward Operating Base Orgun-E had been in place. In terms of religious displays, they are hardly ostentatious — a cross on a small rooftop steeple and cross-shaped windows in the doors. But Sgt. Joel Muhlnickel was alarmed by the symbolism at Orgun-E, especially the cross that rises up over the rooftops at the base.

“When I think of an army sporting a Christian cross, I think Crusades,” Muhlnickel wrote in an email from Orgun. “Neither my country nor my army force me to swear allegiance to Odin, Jesus, Buddha or Horus. Freedom from religious oppression is pretty much the reason why the United States was founded.”

[SNIP]

Muhlnickel raised his concerns through his chain of command, and then — unconvinced that it would result in action — turned to outside organizations, including the nonprofit American Atheists.

“Chaplains know the regulations very well,” said Justin Griffith, an Army sergeant at Fort Bragg, N.C., and military director for American Atheists in his personal time. ”Whoever authorized (the steeple and crosses) knew exactly what they were doing. It’s intentionally disrespectful to the non-Christians in the U.S. military … Put it in Afghanistan, the danger is very real, to personnel, even to Christians.”

Are you familiar with the phrase ‘CYA’?

I’m not sure if that’s a military thing. It stands for Cover Your Ass. NBC caught the Pentagon with its pants down. They replied as if they had already fixed the situation, and I’m fairly certain they tried to play it off like they had already been working on it ‘way before NBC called’.

NBC News:

The Army, contacted by NBC on Tuesday morning, responded to queries Wednesday afternoon, saying the cross had been removed and boards had been placed over the cross-shaped windows while the base ordered new doors.

“The local command in Afghanistan is aware of this chapel and has taken appropriate action to ensure that it is changed into a neutral facility,” said a statement from an Army Spokesman at the Pentagon.

Hours later, Orgun command sent out a memo throughout the base explaining that the chapel was to be brought into compliance by eliminating the crosses, and assuring soldiers that it would be handled in a respectful manner.

In other words:

“Hey there NBC… we totally already took that stuff down. In fact, we’d been planning to since we heard bout it!” Hours later, “Guys, take that stuff down right now so they don’t know I just lied to them!”

I expressed extreme concerns that some hotheaded leader may try to scapegoat Sgt. Muhlnickel for what they should be thanking him for:

Griffith, an atheist who often calls out practices that he believes cross the line from the free exercise of religion to unconstitutional proselytizing or discrimination, has learned that his views are unpopular with many in the military. He’s concerned about Muhlnickel suffering reprisal.

“Sgt. Muhlnickel’s efforts just put the pin back in the grenade,” said Griffith. “The military now needs to protect him from any backlash … and not punish him for speaking out against the dangerous ‘crusader’ symbolism.”

Honestly, all Americans benefit from this. I’m glad the military reacted to American Atheists demands (PDF) so quickly, even if it actually took an NBC reporter asking the questions to actually get anything done.

It would be nice if they did the right thing, even when no one was looking. It seems that our official complaints often fall on deaf ears. Luckily I had one of these built:

rage face lorax with a megaphone - Be like this guy, internet atheists.

Attention all military personnel: if you witness a chapel do anything like this, take pictures and contact me immediately. Read the rest of this entry »
