Growing a set of principles

greg ladens violent threats, ill drink to that

For some reason, Lousy Canuck defends lies about me while he talks about*  a man who was kicked off this blogging network for the exact type of harassment that we all rail against. He argues that we’re all living in different parallel universes. I think he’s right. *(holiday edit) And then there’s when Greg Laden says he wants …

Dolly the cat has been adopted!

Fort Bragg area animal rescue, Thundering Paws, has found a new home for Dolly! You may remember that my wife rescued and nurtured this (then) very pregnant abandoned cat for weeks. We were about to move and Dolly needed a home. In an extremely unfortunate turn of events, a man who was temporarily fostering her …

Greg Laden posts a home address and employer contacts for online rival

Greg Laden said: @Mykeru: Still living here? then linked to a picture of the home where his ex wife lives

This is really vile. I don’t care what you think about your opponent in an argument. You never ever do this: That link contained what he hoped was Mykeru’s home address. Only it wasn’t his home, it was his ex-wife’s home, and that was years ago. Even then, she may not even live there anymore! …

Washington Times op-ed: “West Point is religious”

Two 747's are seen standing on their tails in the NY City skyline as two flying world trade center towers zoom towards them. Caption reads "Washington Times: we reject your reality and substitute our own

Shirley Husar at the Washington Times, wrote an attack piece against atheist West Point Cadet Blake Page. It veers into histrionics rather quickly: If the founders didn’t intend to require that cadets be Catholics or Baptists, they also clearly didn’t intend that they be atheists. Page therefore found himself in a system designed not to eliminate atheists, …

OK Atheists: I reserve the right to circumcise the unsynagogued

anteater with arms out-stretched, as if to challenge someone. "Fuck You I'm an anteater!"

That’s right, the Oklahoma Atheists podcast hosts, Damion Reinhardt and Chas Stewart, reserve the right to circumcise the unsynagogued. Watch out all you heathen anteaters. Actually, the host’s statement wasn’t a non-sequiter at all. It an absurdist reduction of a military chaplain’s proclamation, “I reserve the right to evangelize the un-churched.” That chaplain refused my request for him …

“Is having no head the same as be bald?”

A particularly annoying nagnostic named George showed up to the comments a few days back. Some of us engaged him. Articulett of Debunking Christianity fame mopped the floor with him. It was funny, and it was over. Or not, it seems. Now, George has apparently worked out an ingenious way to still refer to atheism as a …

Mary had a little lamb… of god… that belongs in schools – FIXED

Mary had a little lamb... of god... who belongs in the school

By now you’ve likely seen the divisive “Mary had a little lamb… of god… that belongs in the schools” variant on Facebook. Mary had a little lamb, His fleece was as white as snow. And everywhere that Mary went, The Lamb was sure to go. He followed her to school each day, ‘Twasn’t even in …

FIXED: idiotic “it was 11 days before Christmas, at 9:38″

Jesus: "To be fair, not every child who died in the massacre was from a Christian Family. Dad sent a few to hell." Teacher- "JESUS, WTF!" - Religion in Connecticut percentages broken down, source PEW 2008

The original viral image comes attached with a truly awful poem: twas’ 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38 when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven’s gate. their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air. they could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there. they were filled with such joy, they didn’t know what …

WTF, yoga person!

On the apparent “tragedy” I am sitting in deep gratitude to the children who gave their lives so that millions could open their hearts a little more. For me, to call this a tragedy is the thing that makes it a tragedy. If, instead, we honor it as a gift, we notice how many people hug their children a little tighter, spend their time praying and hoping for peace and pause to feel the love they have for their own families and lives, then we honor these children and what they gave. There is an abundance of beauty in this gift. Appreciate it. When we call it a tragedy: we get sad, angry, self-righteous, and we ensure more anger and violence in the world…as we become the ones to increase it. It’s up to each and every one of us to consciously and gracefully accept the gift these children gave. –To take it as a reminder to love more, care more, say it more, and show it more. Maybe when we no longer need the reminder, these things will no longer happen. Until then, we can each do our part to honor these children and their families by being willing to see they have given a gift to millions.

It’s obviously not just evangelicals and uninformed Christians spinning a national tragedy on their metaphysical terms. Here’s one from a yoga instructor. You see, the real ‘tragedy’ is that people are calling it a ‘tragedy’. Brace yourself: The comments and ‘likes’ were awful too. People said things like “that was beautiful!” Full text below
