Important / FAQs
For Military service members
- How do I fix my official records to say 'ATHEIST'?
In just 5 minutes you can change your records. Walk-throughs provided for all DoD branches. Air Force Navy and Marine Corps can do so online.
- Why should I avoid "NO-REL-PREF" as my religious preference on my official records?
This is a debate-ending reason to fix your records. Also, NRP is just incorrect. Atheists don't have a religion, however, you *do* have a preference about religion.
- How can I avoid saying "So help me god?" and avoid signing contracts with the phrase?
Many service members respectfully refuse, and they are fully within their legal rights to do so. You may face some flack from uninformed superiors, but you will definitely win any challenge they throw at you. Contact me if you need to.
- How one NCO got prayer removed from ceremonies.
Not all service members will have this opportunity but if you are in a position to make a difference, this is a play-by-play of an epic victory.
[Expect this list to grow quite a bit.]
For Civilians
- How can civilians help foxhole atheists?
In as little as 30 seconds you can make a huge difference. Add your phone call or email to a stack of other voices demand justice.
- I like to click on things - can I help?
Yes! Use those sharing buttons, help us spread the word. Join the American Atheists Military facebook group to directly interact with a large number of foxhole atheists. Like the RBB page for blog-post and festival-related discussion.
- How can civilians help to make it safer for service members to be openly atheist?
Show up to Rock Beyond Belief 2 at Camp Pendleton (San Diego, CA).Be a part of history, and stand with us in solidarity in great numbers.
- I hate all of you military thugs, what should I do?

Even more Facepalm
A really awesome Facebook group, American Atheists Military is uniting service members, veterans and supportive civilians. This is where a lot of important issues are first discovered, and brought to light. There is a constant stream of foxhole atheists correcting their dog tags to say 'ATHEIST' and putting them up on the wall. Throw yours up there! No 'anti-war' or 'anarchist' trolling, please.

Not to disparage the act(s) of waging war, but the stated philosophy of Jesus is a pacifism so extreme as to preclude even the existence of a military. Whoever draws these pics, do they even read the bible?

Yup. Especially the part about “bringing a sword to a gunfight.” Or however that goes.

“I come not to bring peace, but to bring a sword” (Gospel of Matthew 10:34)
Oh, that pacifist Jesus.

@Jixamn:
“But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.” Matt: 5:39
“Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.” Matt: 26:52
I’m not agreeing with Jesus; just highlighting his stated opinions. Also I want to make the point that shoehorning Jesus into combat zones is hypocritical and disgusting. You can have war as an option, hypothetical American voter, but don’t pretend Jesus has your back.

Thank god the bible doesn’t contradict it’s self or we’d never have any agreement among Christians. Oh… right…

There’s a line in the old movie Taras Bulba that I like better than religion, I modified it a bit to suit myself. “Put your faith in your sword and your sword in your enemy.” Much more likely to provide for survival than pacifism.

What’s even worse about that civilian on the battlefield is that dress he’s wearing. He’s bound to trip over it.

Which only goes to show that the emo slacker was as full of contradictions as the book he followed. Did you think your quotes negated the other one?

@Aquaria:
I’m not interested in biblical inconsistency. My point is that the Jesus described in that book Christians pretend to read was the last person who can be imagined sanctioning war.
I’m sickened by mawkish depictions of The Notorious J.H.C. as a gun-totin’ American patriot. Especially when the people who claim to be his fan club would happily curb-stomp him if he showed up at an NRA rally.

The philosophy of the believer is the philosophy of Jesus. If you believe it, Jesus will back you up. You want to be a pacifist? Jesus is a pacifist. You want to kill your enemies? Jesus says kill your enemies. You want to hate gays? Jesus says hate gays.
It doesn’t matter what is in the Bible. That’s just a strawman for us atheists to poke with sticks.

Excuse me. What you’re doing is wrong. No, I don’t mean believing or not believing in whatever you wish. I mean attacking other people’s beliefs. It’s unacceptable. If you don’t want to go to some gathering then don’t. That’s fine. Denigrating, making offensive comments to ANYONE about their faith or lack of it is not acceptable behavior. There is no moral difference between what you are doing and attacking gays or Jews or any particular group. Practice what you want, but LEAVE OTHERS ALONE TO DO THE SAME.
Might be worth some sober thought.

Wow! All these commenters seem a little too “issues-oriented” to have noticed the joke in the ‘toon… which is a shame, cause I thought it was kinda funny.
In fact, I’m not on either side of this debate because I’m faitly annoyed by Christians and atheists alike.
Great song about Christianity (and Mormons): People’s Court Pt. 2 by Muta Baruka. The lyrical content is the trial of Mr Religious Belief and Mr Denomination by the notorious firebrand Judge One T’ousand Years.
I taped this song off a Jamaican pirate radio station in London in the 90s when I was a teenager, and when I finally nabbed a copy last year (almost 40 now!) I could still remember every word.
Seriously, blood, it’s funnier than your cartoon. Less relevant, I admit. Anyways, luck with the concerts and whatnot!

sez james pennell: “What you’re doing is wrong. … I mean attacking other people’s beliefs. It’s unacceptable.”
Couldn’t agree with you more, James. Please do continue speaking out in favor of leaving other people’s beliefs in peace! Of course, it’s worth noting that something like 75-80 percent of the US population is Christians of one sect or another. And one high holy hell of a lot of these Christians are seemingly incapable of mentioning non-Christian beliefs without attacking them, not to mention all those Christians whose attacks on non-Christian beliefs ‘only’ occur every however-many days, rather than constantly. Likewise, it’s worth noting that atheists constitute only about 10-20 percent of the US population. Given these facts, it’s pretty clear that in the US, Christian attacks on other people’s beliefs pretty much *have to* outnumber atheist attacks on other people’s beliefs, by a factor of about 4:1. So, James, may I suggest that in your laudable campaign against Attacking Other People’s Beliefs, your time and efforts would yield far better results if you focused on Christians, and left the atheists alone? Once the ambient level of Christian intolerance of people’s beliefs drops to 1/4 its present value, it’ll make a lot more sense to fuss over atheist intolerance of other people’s beliefs.

All I Have to say to you is Look out. Your Playing with fire that you don’t even have the tiniest clue how serious it is. If you don’t want to believe in God thats your choice but don’t push your foolish choice on other people. You are looking for a serious judgement with your actions. Just wanted to warn you sir.
