    1) Comradde, the Daily Fail? HOW COULD YOU?

    2) The right wing attracts all sorts of crazy, and some of them are mentally ill.

Being right wing IS mental illness, K.

Subhuman right wing gun nuts? Totally. And white supremacists as well. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn they spent some time at the Bundy ranch.

I do, however, wish that CPP would, just once, add a few thoughts of his own other than in the headline.

The number of shootings the last couple of weeks is staggering.

Stop it with the mental illness bullshit, please. Fucked-up thinking and beliefs are not a mental illness. These people or anyone else may or may bot have a mental illness, but let’s stop using it as a negative category by default. K?

‘Cept mental illness often involves a poor relationship with reality in some way or another. Even mood disorders. Or ADHD. You think you’re a pack of shit despite having a pretty damn good life by any analysis? Poor relationship with reality. You see danger around every corner? Poor relationship with reality. You can’t control impulses in some way or another and bork up your life? Poor relationship with reality.

I am related to actual mentally ill people. I am almost certain my mother has an anxiety disorder (with a significant genetic component, upon observation of her family) and that my father is, if not on the autistic spectrum, pretty damned close to it (and Dad’s weirdness is corroborated by the fact that his parents were in their late forties and early fifties when he was born and accounts from his family). It is by a stroke of luck that the worst I ever had was situational – EXOGENOUS! – depression in my younger years, which was successfully treated. Mental illness can make people do some phenomenally stupid, annoying, and/or dangerous shit. Impulse control problems are one of the biggest factors in crime.

I know that in many cases these people literally cannot control what they do. I’m familiar with some of the neurobiology from what I’ve learned in the course of my neuroscientific training. What are we supposed to do? Let them run around like Autistic/Disabled Kid Whose Mom Treats Her/Him Like A Special Snowflake And Who Doesn’t Learn Discipline As A Result (because this fucking happens apparently, from the couple of accounts I’ve read from family members of autistic people)? No, that results in disaster. Fuck that.

I’m not going to give someone’s shit behavior a fucking pass just because they’re missing a few marbles. The mentally ill, by dint of the fact that they are humans, are still conditionable.

When the court ordered a psychiatric evaluation of the mass murderer Breivik, it took a long time and the first result got overturned by a second evaluation. Figuring out wether a murderer is “sane” or merely an asshole is a non-trivial task. I agree that far too many murder cases get lumped in with “crazy perpetrator” assumptions.

It is, in fact, perfectly possible to be sane and commit mass murder -just ask the Yugoslavians and the Rwandans. It is a matter of internally de-humanising the victims. Once you have done this, you can do anything.

Now confirmed. They got kicked out, apparently. Too crazy for the other RWNJ’s.

For the record, low verbal IQ is connected to violence – violent people are too stupid to get out their angry-wangries using words, so the stupid little gibbons use big sticks, some of which are sharp, some of which boom.

Not stigmatize them as inherently lesser beings or intrinsically violent people, for a start. And immediately blaming “mental illness” when things like this happen does both of those things (particularly odd, given that the mentally ill are more likely to be victims than perpetrators).
