While I sympathize in a general way with your emotional reaction the modern Republicans, in this case you are off base. San Antonio is in the middle of the most flood prone area in the US. We have massive public works–including a huge damn, built in the 1920s, that usually has no water behind it, and two tunnels, 24ft in diameter, that funnel water under the city for several miles and back into the river. In the 60s and 70s the San Antonio River was heavily rechanneled to improve flow-through. Even so, we have had at least four huge floods in the area in the 25 years I’ve lived here, not to mention dozens of smaller events.

We know there have been massive floods here since there was anyone around who writing things down. The first two locations of Mission San Antonio were wiped out by floods. It was the third location that later became known as the Alamo.

And frankly, both women who died in this case tried to drive through low water crossings that are clearly marked. There are public service announcements year-round and every time it rains heavily the news people practically get down on their knees and beg people not to attempt driving through them when there is water flowing across the roads, and every time there are a few who try it. Then fire rescue has to risk their lives to try to get them out and sometimes they don’t get there in time.

So you honestly can’t blame the Republicans on this one. There are certainly plenty of things to blame them for. This just isn’t one of them.
