Because theye are dumshitte tennis players. It’s like a keop for them, I guess, plus they think it makes them look cool. Kinda like the way some arseholes play guitar, as if they were going to destroy something with it. Happens in lots of places, but yeah, it’s quite the thing with tennis players.

I’m also a big fan of golf announcers whispering in a booth ten miles away as if they were going to disturb someone’s shot.

Ever since Monica Seles I’ve always cheered against anyone that feels a need to sonically exaggerate their swing as if they’ve plumbed the depths of their being to find every last micropicojoule of energy to unleash like it was the last thing they were doing before dying of complete exhaustion. I don’t understand the necessity of primeval ehortations on every shot and the added expenditure of energy it must entail.
Can you imagine batters in baseball grunting/screeching at every swing, fielders on every throw, pitchers on every pitch? How about tee-offs in the PGA!

Jeez give them a break. Those doing things beyond the ability of most of the human race shouldn’t be critiqued for how they do it.

I bet its really, really fun to make that noise. Perhaps more actions, every day actions, should be supplemented with a rusty scythe evisceration noise?

because where they come from, it’s not polite to grunt while evacuating solid waste. They have to have an outlet for those grunts somewhere.

  6. 6

They grunt because they don’t know the words. If they knew the words, they’d sing instead.

Paper in PLoS one:A Preliminary Investigation Regarding the Effect of Tennis Grunting: Does White Noise During a Tennis Shot Have a Negative Impact on Shot Perception?

    from the discussion section:
“It still remains unknown, and it will be very difficult to ascertain, whether many of the most prolific grunters intentionally grunt to interfere with their opponent’s performance. Regardless, our data suggest that when they grunt they are gaining an unfair advantage.”

Who wouldnt want an unfair advantage that is not mentioned in rulebook? All the non-grunters are probably just too shy to grunt in public.

Besides masking the sound of the stroke (as skipo mentions), it increases reproducibility by keeping the breath the same for every shot.
Even idiots know this, but perhaps not fucking idiots.

Who wouldnt want an unfair advantage that is not mentioned in rulebook?
If it is not verboten, is it an unfair advantage? What about the frequent situation of a grunter vs. a screecher – who has the unfair advantage?

Isn’t it mainly women players who grunt? Why don’t the men grunt too?
