Some of the discussion about Science Cheerleaders has devolved into a focus on the “thoughts” inside the minds of the girls/women who “choose” to cheer and of the boys/men who “choose” to leer.
The underlying assumption is that hott sexxay bangable is a bug in the cheerleading program, and if people just “open their minds” and “change their thinking”, then this bug can be rooted out. The problem with this notion is that hott sexxay bangable is not a bug in cheerleading; it’s a feature. In fact, it’s the killer app.
None of this has anything to do with particular thoughts in individual people’s minds. Cheerleading is one cog in a complex machine of indoctrination into heteronormative patriarchal oppression.
Viewing it as the individualized choices of individual girls/women to cheer and individual boys/men to leer is grossly insufficient to understand what is really going on.
(And by the way, in relation to this discussion thread, do people really believe it’s just a coincidence that it happens to be in the context of science cheerleading that two gibbering dumfuckes whipped out their fucken dickes and started jousting over the hott crazy smart science chicks they banged and whether they got sloppy seconds? Yeah, this is all about “thoughts” in individual people’s minds, and changing people’s “perspectives”. Sure thing.)

As opposed to gibbering dumfucks whipping out their dickes to joust over who is a bigger feminist?

“do people really believe it’s just a coincidence”
It wasn’t a coincidence or only because the cheerleaders are so incredibly hot, it was an acknowledged attempt to troll and derail the discussion. Which Brian mostly tolerated:( Brian actually seemed way more offended by the idea that anyone would ‘think that way’ about wholesome cheerleaders.
It’s a little hard to believe that surreal thread ever even existed. Sorry, I am not the first to say this, but labspaces lost some credibility with that thread. But it undoubtedly increased traffic to the site. Congrats Brian.
It made me thankful for the relatively egalitarian environment I have been in for a while now. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard anyone speak so disrespectfully about women.(so yeah El picador, I’ll take the gibbering dumfucks whipping out their dickes to joust over who is a bigger feminist anytime over that display).
Although it was almost funny when tideliar (oooh so edgy-he’s so proud of being an asshole! and so transparently desperate to be seen as a ‘bad boy’) in his pathetic neediness managed to brag about his IQ in the middle of his revolting storytelling. Funny, but sad.

I HEART you so much! You’re so fucking vacuous. Little spiteful Isabel pats all over the internet. Of all the trolls I know and HEART, you are one of the best, purely because you’re so fucking dumb.

Actually, I didn’t want to brag, but I’ve got you beat in the IQ department;) As do probably half the people around here btw. Just so you know how idiotic and pathetic you sound when you’re bragging.
“troll”? “pats all over the internet” eh? yeah, I clicked a few links recently to read related discussions on academic blogs on a subject I am involved in (science outreach), mostly on sites that I regularly read and where I often comment as an science grad student. yup, that’s a troll for ya! And funny how *you* turn up in all those same places. But I’m sure *you* have a good reason for being there;)

Ya know, if someone had told me a couple of weeks ago that Isabel and CPP would be on one side of an argument, and Tideliar and Genomic Repairman on the other, I would have laughed.
If somebody had told me *I* would be agreeing with the former two over the later two, I would have herniated myself laughing.
And yet, now that it’s happened, I just want to schmack people. Or cry in my soup.
Life is funny.

Have you considered that this is a sign you are nowhere near as clever and perceptive as you think you are?

I consider everything to be a sign that I am nowhere near as clever and perceptive as I think I am.
Then I ask- compared to what?
I’m surprised you haven’t realized by now- this schtick is predominantly aimed at entertaining myself. If I make someone else laugh, that’s fantastic. However, impressing someone on the internet with my cleverness is about as meaningful as impressing them with the deliciousness of my pumpkin pie.

Um…others? I believe that’s generally understood.
