It’s a shame when someone dies prematurely, and leaves behind friends, family, and colleagues who cared for, and will miss, him or her.
It’s also a shame when someone uses a prominent position of influence to the overall detriment of our polity.
How’s that for evenhanded?

Be remembered when you die as a decent and caring person, nothing else in this life matters AT ALL.
Mr. Russert seems to have been a most decent person- nothing else matters one wit, not his politics, not his job, none of that.

drdrA: That’s enormously generous — too generous, I think — and it all hinges upon the definition of “decent.” Within the boundaries of family and friends, Russert may have been “decent.” But as someone with enormous media clout and abundant airtime, Russert was laughably accommodating with Bush lackeys and henchmen. That’s what I would call “indecent.”

There is no argument from me on wholesale failure of the media in this country to keep our elected officials accountable for their actions. If you want to look at Mr. Russert’s record with respect to his current journalistic ‘colleagues’… it’s not so shabby. Who the hell else does political news on television (I’m not even going to mention talk radio) these that is LESS ‘accommodating’ to Bush lackeys and henchmen… in this era sadly dominated by fox news ‘fair and balanced’ coverage.
All I’m saying is… it is the person that you are, and the kind of life that you lead that matters- as opposed to what your profession is.
