Holy Shit! House Dems Led By Nancy Pelosi Sack The Fuck Up!

It looks like House Dems led by Nancy Pelosi have succeeded in keeping their fucking knees from knocking long enough in fear of the shitheel Republicans to pass a FISA amendment bill that lacks the most egregious of Bush’s self- and corporate oligarch-supporting measures. And Pelosi stood up strongly against the sick-fuck right-wing accusation that Dem opposition to expanded warrantless eavesdropping powers and retroactive telecom immunity is gonna mean YOUR CHILDREN ARE GOING TO DIE DIE DIE!~!!!~!W!!!11!11!~!~1~1111!!!!!:

Bush appeared on the White House’s South Lawn Thursday to demand House passage of the Senate legislation, warning lawmakers: “The American people understand the stakes in this struggle. They want their children to be safe from terror.”

Then the House went off script. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) responded by all but calling the president a liar.

“We understand our responsibility to protect the American people. What the president is trying to do is something that we think should be stopped,” she said. “I am stating a fact. The president is wrong, and he knows it.”

Kick ass!

I”m sure why, but I don’t trust this at all.

After all, BoyKing will just veto it.

Pelosi gains public cred with us malcontents, and winks slyly at BoyKing as he pens the veto.

It’s a bright and shiny distraction as the inevitable comes to be.

They spy on us, and save the info, and use it when it serves their purpose.

    Just ask Elliott Spitzer.

My guess is the federal prosecuters were all over him from years back when Spitz too ON the establishment of Wall Street.

Funny, a $300 Billion bailout of Carlyle Group, and the busted banks, the same day Spitz is busted. N the fed’s has this info of Spitz and his misdoings for MONTHS!!! Spitz was whoring long ago, and they KNEW it!!!

They just sat on it, till it was to their best interest.

    Ya know? Pelosi’s rant?

    Much ado about nothing.

Rid me of that meddlesome fool, please. And all like her.

Actually, it looks like Congressional Dems may very well have won this one. Bush’s veto doesn’t matter. In that case, the existing FISA law–which does not contain retroactive telecom immunity or the expanded warrantless wiretapping provisions Bush seeks–remains in force and unamended. The point, at least for now, is to *not* pass any amendment that contains those two things.

Since when does ANY legislation the House OR Senate approve, get passed if the President vetoes it?

    Maybe I’m not following you.

My understanding is, if the Prez vetoes, it’s over. No pass.

    Zip. Zilch. Nada.

That’s the premise of my saying Pelosi did NOT make a grand stand, it was ALL about the pomp and circumstance.

    Bueller? Anyone? How’s this work?

    You’re misunderstanding the situation.

The important point is to *not* pass FISA amendment legislation that gives Bush (1) retroactive telecom immunity and (2) expanded warrantless wiretapping powers.

By passing this legislation–which lacks those things–instead of the bill already passed by the Senate–which possessed those things–the House has likely ensured that no FISA amendment bill possessing those things will pass both the House and Senate. This is the case regardless of whether this particular bill is enacted or not.

You also seem to be misunderstanding what it means for legislation to “pass”. The House or Senate “pass” a bill when the bill receives a majority of votes. A bill is “enacted” into law after it is either passed by simple majority in both the House and Senate and signed by the President, or passed by a veto-proof supermajority in both the House and Senate.

Go read Greenwald if you want a more detailed explanation of the FISA amendment situation.

Agreed PP. Pleasantly surprising evidence of stones and scheming.
Here’s hoping that there’s a similar strategy already at work to impeach the corrupt treasonous bastards and throw their asses in PMITA prison. Yeah, I know, it will never happen. But still……

This “victory” will mean something only if the DoJ actually prosecutes telecoms and executives. I don’t know about you, but I’m not holding my breath.

This “victory” will mean something only if the DoJ actually prosecutes telecoms and executives.

Untrue. In the absence of retroactive immunity, civil lawsuits against the telecoms will proceed to discovery.
