I fell asleep on the bus… I haven’t actually woken up yet, have I? Shit, I’d better not miss my stop!

  2. komarov says

Isn’t all this horribly unamerican? The milita members are probably incapable of feeling embarrasment but I’d expect all this foreign stuff to make them a bit uneasy. At the very least the loincloth could have been decorated with stars and stripes…

But perhaps I’m conflating different groups of awful people. It’s hard to tell sometimes. Besides, I only made it half-way through the video. An oafish bully bragging about being an oafish bully … nah.

  3. barbayat says

If one forgets that those lunatics have guns, might even vote people in who can murder people without consequences via drones (more than right now) … this might actually be funny to some extent.

Given how things are, I find it more scary.

There is so much wrong with this – like how proud this overgrown man-baby is of being an abusive a-hole, that he feels like his mother’s love is dependent on who is more brutal and violent. As if this was a video game and beating your final opponent gets you to unlock the “Mommy’s darling” achievement on steam. *shudders*

  4. blf says

For multiple reasons — including technical issues — I cannot / won’t watch the video, but from the propaganda still, it appears the militantterrorist “thinks” he wants something to do with sumo, perhaps being flipped over by a bulldozer. I suggest an inquiry to Japan’s new sumo champion, Kotoshogiku (Japan’s decade-long wait for sumo champion comes to an end: “Kotoshogiku […] claims Emperor’s Cup in what may mark beginning of challenge to years of domination by Mongolian fighters”).

Explaining the situation could be amusing…

Oh. Dear. God. Sex toys, lube by the barrel, seditious gibbering and now a fat guy in a diaper? I thought our High Palins Drifters had found their nadir but once again I’m dramatically proven wrong. Please, won’t someone find these guys an NEA grant for their performance art?

Just gone mad? I personally count the trajectory toward loony town when Ronald Reagan was elected president.

Are some of the militiamen worse than the sumo wrestler? Ryan Payne may be further off the reality train … and more dangerous:

[…] He came to believe that “in most states you have the lawful authority to kill a police officer that is unlawfully trying to arrest you.” […]

    Missoula Independent link

One of the armed militants occupying the Malheur Wildlife Refuge is Ryan Payne. He’s a veteran of the Iraq war (and once erroneously identified as an Army Ranger), serving in a infantry unit specializing in “military intelligence.” He was Cliven Bundy’s “head of security” during the Nevada standoff at the Bundy ranch and he’s been in Burns, trying to organize locals and the takeover of the refuge since early December.

He’s a controversial militia member, even among fellow militia types, because of his aggression and apparent desire to do armed battle with the U.S. government. The Missoula Independent profiled Payne after the conclusion of the Nevada standoff and noted his belief in outrageous conspiracy theories, […]

    Daily Kos link

    Other beliefs of Ryan Payne:
    – slavery never really existed in the United States and African Americans in the antebellum South “didn’t view themselves as slaves.”
    – the founders of the United States intended for the states to act as sovereign countries.
    – taxes are a form of “legal plunder.”
    – names are spelled in all-caps on driver’s licenses because U.S. citizens are actually “corporate entities.”
    – when a newborn child’s footprint is made on a birth certificate, that child is effectively entering a life of servitude to the U.S. government, which borrows money from China based on that child’s estimated lifetime earning potential.

  9. says

So it sounds like Payne has fallen for a bunch of the common Sovereign Citizen etc. etc. ideas. All of which add up to Payne thinking he can do whatever the hell he wants, and good luck to you if get in his way.

Hello. I came across a worrying bit of info on twitter – an alternative FtB site called the orbit – with a small subset of bloggers which didn’t include PZ or Dr Carrier. Is FtB breaking up? That would be a tragedy.

!. One of the guys at MNWR beat his father to death with a steel bolt.
    2. Two of those at the Nevada standoff went on to ambush and kill two cops. Sovereign citizens have killed eight cops already.
    3. I’ve no doubt there will be more dead one way or another.

    Re: Marcus Ranum, #21:

Perhaps, then, I can offer a solution that should please everyone:
Allow, or rather enable the bird sanctuary to secede from the union. Officially, the US will have none of it, naturally. What are the benefits?

    1) The former militia, now the Loyal Army of the Free Nation of Bird Sanctuary, Oregon, will be free from tyranny. Obvioulsy this does not include any self-inflicted tyranny which shouldn’t take long to set up.

    2) Certain people with certain views will be drawn to FNBS like flies to garbage. These people are in dire need of an education about the benefits and uses of a (reasonably) functional government, and they shall receive it.

    3) Everyone else can feel a little better knowing that the deep-end delusionists are flying their own banner now and aren’t going to bother anyone but each other for a while.

    4) The United States finally have a legitimate target nation to embargo, harass and harangue. One wonders why this isn’t happening already.

    5) When – Gods forbid – the Free Nation of Bird Sanctuary finally collapses under the strain of, well, who knows*, the US can ‘liberate’ the lost territories. Finally a winnable war.** It shouldn’t take more than 25-30 years and 46 trillion dollars to occupy and re-democratise the former Free Nation. Dollars that would otherwise have to be spent on education, infrastructure, science, welfare and debt reduction.

    Everybody wins!

*The difficulty is not so much a matter of deciding what would fell the fledgeling nation, but what would do so first. Best guess: population attrition due to ‘political differences’ and the resulting shoot-out.

**According to top-notch analysts who lost their last bit of credibility several wars ago but somehow still have a say in these matters.

    I watched it.
I became distracted immediately by the fact that this guy actually knows Sumo.
Turns out that Kelly Gneiting was a ‘champion’ in USA Sumo.
    He is also LDS.

Turns out that Kelly Gneiting was a ‘champion’ in USA Sumo.

So he’s an expert, challenging someone who presumably knows nothing about sumo, to a match? i.e.: a slaughter.

I’m gonna assess him an extra +20 Asshat Points for that. 10 for cowardice and 10 for making his sensei spin in his grave.

  18. redwood says

Agree with chigau (違う)@24–the guy does know sumo and has a great body for it. When I first came to Japan many years ago, I taught at a school that had a sumo club, so I joined it and wore a mawashi like Gneiting did in the video. However the top-level wrestlers in sumo must have hinkaku (dignity) and not act like jerks, something perhaps missing in Gneiting’s training regimen.

  19. says

He should take up the challenge. The sight of Chris Christie in a king size adult diaper would be guaranteed to get the good ole boys blowing their brains out to blot it out of what passes for their minds. Actually they are so full of shit, forget sending the sex toys just send them king size disposable diapers instead.
