I have been on a research ship and the submersible people kept all their footage well away from everyone, because you know… publish or perish. That surprised and disappointed me. We would have to wait month before being shown anything.

I’m glad to see that some do things differently.

F.O. I get the impression from the commentary that they needed to share to identify things. Most science subjects are reaching or have passed the point where there is so much more than even the biggest heads can take in. I agree with the going public thing though – I’ve been in IT for 40 years and am amazed that people patent things that I knew about 30 years ago – they may be genuine in thinking they’ve discovered something new but most fields are getting so broad that one persons discovery is another person reminiscence.

A line from some recent documentary has stuck with me, which is: The commercial fishing take is a little over half a billion pounds per day. 518-something million pounds (using 2011 stats). Every day.

    Is that accurate??

No idea, but I just read that 1/3 of the primary productivity of coastal waters (not sure how those are defined) goes to us.
