“colloquially known as justice”

David Petraeus has made a plea deal on the charge of revealing secret military plans to his paramour/biographer, and of lying to federal investigators. He’s getting off with a trivial misdemeanor rather than getting strung up for treachery. Popehat has a few things to say about that.

    I hope Scott Walker picks Petraeus as his vice presidential running mate. Petraeus is a natural for a GOP veep.

    It is kind of ironic that after the kerfuffle over “General Betray Us” and the supposed vindication of the troop surge, it turns out that Petraeus actually did do something entirely gratuitous that could compromise national security.

    And by “ironic” I mean totally unsurprising and predictable.

    What a difference it makes to be a high ranking general versus, say, a computer professional working for the government or an Internet activist. Or to have information that’s vital to national security (actual codes) versus information that embarrasses the government. It also probably makes a difference that your purpose was to impress your girlfriend and give her some choice bits for her book versus informing people of government treachery. Yeah, what a difference power, connections, and wealth can make. Who knew.

    Patraeus leaked SCI data. SCI, Special Compartmented Information, is more restrictive than Top Secret, and has to do with intelligence methods and sources. Chelsea Manning leaked information with a lower classification and got 35 years in the slammer.

    @Robro:
    Yet another sad example of politicians believing in the Right of Divine Kings; colloquially phrased as “Oh serf, laws are for thee, not for me.”

    Hmm a high court, low court facsimile, all the US needs now is to rename the office of president to king and it is back to being part of a monarchy.

    Over-The-Top Secret?
