‘Twas the night before Christmas…around FtB

Look at all these people celebrating a secular Christmas, if they’re celebrating at all.

I’m hanging out with family. This is my kind of Christmas.

So what are you doing today and tomorrow?

    Aha!
There’s a movie I haven’t seen. Thanks, chigau! (Was it you who mentioned The World’s End? That one’s waiting for New Year’s Eve)

Drinking beer and port and vin and whisk(e)y and, if I remember, “watching” Hogfather.

That, at least, is the plan for this evening…
If the Auditor’s plan succeeds, the sun won’t rise tomorrow, so I’m not going to worry about anytimes later.

Well I’m trying to finish off a sore throat before I visit family on Thursday. It’s my first Christmas away from “home”. So emotionally it’s hard but being sick makes it a little easier by providing me with an excuse to stay here. I have a lamb breast drying in the fridge for tomorrow and I’m about to go to the supermarket for some things.

Hogfather is definitely on the list of things to watch. Thanks for the reminder.

Picked up #2 Son at the train station last night, and informed him we have three growlers we need help with (nut brown ale, chocolate stout, chocolate cherry stout) White wine in the sun? For us, make that dark beer in the deep-freeze. Tonight, same for #1 Son.

This aft, spouse and I are applying flashing LED strings to the TARDIS door (which started as a Halloween decoration for the bathroom door, and we still haven’t taken it down. And I’ll do a bunch of work on my railroad.

Turns out there are no Chinese take-outs open on Xmas here. Plan B is to go to a sushi place.

My actual plan for the day? My cousin’s come down to see me and she’s discovered “my secret identity” she’s currently teaching me about site design. So actually learning something.

Clinic is still run though and I expect cases to start in a few hours since everyone’s out on the lash (lot oof Christians here)

I had never realized that Tim Minchin can sing nicely. Referring to the sound of his voice, not the awful awful true things he says about religion nearly all the time. I listened to the whole 7 minutes. It has a very nice melody, very mathematical in the chosen sequence of harmonic frequencies. It has nice chords, and the lyrics aren’t spooky.

I have been an atheist and a music lover all my life, and I think I agree with (and experience) every single sentiment expressed in the song. It’s very christmassy. Which I believe is the intention. Quite a musical and poetic accomplishment, then. Moving, too. It brought a tear to my eye. So does this, and this particularly when the duet begins (2m20s).

Lucky I even made it onto this site… I use Tor and FTB uses WordPress, which uses a plugin from CloudFlare, an internet service that usually serves me with a CAPTCHA screen blocking my access to all FTB blogs.
This is an off-topic teaser: if you’re interested, more in Thunderdome#50.

I’ll be leaving work at 3PM, picking up a few goodies with which to stuff stockings with tonight when I reprise my yearly role of Cthulhu Claus (I drive my wife insane and then devour all of her cooking), then she and I will sit down to watch some classic and contemporary animated Christmas shows we’ve recorded on the PVR over the last six weeks , while I see how much of a dent I can put into the three kegs of homemade beer I recently put in the kegerator (red ale, brown ale, and winter ale).
We’ll be ruining Christmas for religious fascists everywhere in the best way we know how: by celebrating it without any reverence for the religious aspects of it whatsoever.

Ed Brayton learns that the creationists are looking for Orcs.
Chris Rodda has already found one: Bill O’Reilly.

If you say loofah or falafel enough times, does he say “Stop poking meeee“?

  9. Stella says

I’ll be watching Branagh’s Hamlet. It has a madwoman and treacherous relatives, so it should feel like home.

My very favorite family Christmas movie is The Lion in Winter, with Peter O’Toole and Katherine Hepburn, but I can’t find my copy. It takes me back to my youth and the family holidays with Mom, Dad and all the siblings together at the ancestral home.

Failing those, I recommend The Ref.

How damn beautiful and touching an expression of warmth in this seasonal and reflective time. I think I have a new favorite carol. Here is a song that should be sung far and wide. Nice job Tim!

A bit more than 2 more hours to go, then I’m done at work and go home. No, I’m not in the US or Europe, either. Lunar New Year soon, then 5 WEEKS off!! Yay!

  12. Menyambal --- I'll be a monkey's nephew. says

We are doing a tree and presents and breakfast. I found some good stuff to give. It is our day to have family time, and a day for being together.

  13. baryogenesis says

Helped daughter move grandkids and presents to son’s place ’cause they haven’t had power for 4 days. And it’s -15C. Shut off the water and opened all the taps, gathered bedding, food, presents and booze by flashlight in a freezing house. Interesting “holidays”. (/whining) Cheers, all; whatever you’re doing.

Approx 11pm 24th to 5am 25th: marathon cutthroat no-quarter-given charades cage-fight death-match, with pause at midnight for presents.
Today: work, plus long dog walk.
Dog is now sleeping the sleep of the happily knackered; I am trying to finish the work I did most of this morning.

My sympathies to those left without power by various storms and mishaps, and my very best wishes that Our Squidly Overlord plus all of us assorted myriad minions have the best/least-worst possible of days (not to mention weeks and more).
