Friday Cephalopod: Wonderporn!

Oooh, those glossy thick pages. The bright colors that pop. The action shots. The extreme closeups. I admit it: I have an addiction to aquarist magazines. You’ve gotta check out CORAL: the reef & marine aquarium magazine, especially this issue, the one with the big bold feature on “WRASSES”. Turn to page 70. Oooh, baby. Wonderpus action, with the camera right up in the sweet spot.

Insertion! Hooah!

Money shot. Mmmm.

Was it good for you, too?

Hmm, perhaps a behavioral compulsion or impulse control issue, but not an addiction. A recent brain-imaging study suggests that an addiction model for an inability to self-regulate aquarist-porn viewing is less useful than other psychological models.

If we’re outing ourselves in this fashion: Reef Builders blog has fantastic features of Cnidaria pin-ups along with fevered, high-end gadgetry-gasms, used to sustain these delicate inverts in a glass box. There’s a reefbuilding hermatypic bias on the site of course, but when they do appear the rare and exotic octocorals steal the show.

Here’s a sampling to spark the fancy.

I like that the photos have their eyes covered by black rectangles, to preserve their anonymity.

Just like underground ’70s porn! Bow-chicka-bow!
