Comments screwed up

Hang tight, everyone, you aren’t banned (well, some of you are. Go away). We’re having some strange technical problems right now, where everyone’s comments are being automatically tossed into moderation. The masters of the machines are working on it now.

Meanwhile, I’m manually approving comments as fast as I can, but I’ve got all these teaching obligations, you know…if your comment is held up, I’ll get to it eventually.

I thought it was just me being moderated, and I thought to myself “It’s about damn time!”

Also, and this is way OT, but my ginch reeks of cat piss.

  2. Beatrice, an amateur cynic looking for a happy thought says

Uh, good to read. I was thinking whether to bother Caine or wait ’till morning, and panic was winning out. See what you do to people with this blog, PZ, see? :)

Is it fixed now? My last comment seemed to get through without going through moderation. I was wondering why this place seemed so quiet. I kept refreshing threads that had been lively only to see them grind to a halt.

Beatrice, you can bother me anytime. And it’s not a bother. I’m one of the more easily contactable peoples. When I realized it was FTB wide, I assumed a tech problem, but still…yikes, bad moment there.

I haven’t seen any pods, but there was a ginormous zucchini on the bench outside Denny’s yesterday, with a note on it saying “Take me home! Eat me!”, so…

That’s… eerie. That same day, a cucumber my wife bought went AWOL somewhere between the car and the kitchen!

Just a quick question – does anyone else read FTBs on an iPad or tablet? If so, have you come across an ad that opens up (without touching it) and fills the entire screen? There’s a X box in the corner to dismiss it and once dismissed you’re back at the page you were viewing originally. That happened to me for the first time this morning here on Pharyngula. Was curious if others have come across that.

PZed: See what your godless ways have brought upon you! You must believe in the Gremlin living in your machine or it will eat your silicon and prey upon your T100 line. Either that or Mr. Tech Guy needs to reboot the server…just like our Tech Guy just had to do with our serv…OMG!!!…what a weird coincidence. This couldn’t be just an accident. I’m sure it means something…perhaps the end of the world…or the end of the week.

I get zedo things on my iPad but they open in a new tab and I often don’t notice.

I’m not very familiar with how higher education works, but I was under the impression that manually approving blog comments is what graduate students are for.

Great idea, but UMM is an undergraduate institution. Poor PZ. He has to wear many more hats….

Undergraduates are even cheaper than grad students.

I get that anywhere without Adblock, eg work PC or my phone.
I’m curious to see how this particular error happened, in WordPress that should really just be a one click issue.

[shiver] Just a little taste of what it would be like to get through my day without Pharyngula. I am undoubtedly addicted.

Thanks, PZ, for cleaning up manually when necessary.

Rorschach, do you have an antidote for Pharyngula addiction?

  14. Gorg says

Thanks Anthony, chigau and rorschach. I thought it might be a page hijack (I’ve had that happen on some other non-FTB WordPress sites that I read regularly) but this sounds like normal operation.

I’m curious to see how this particular error happened,

I don’t think it’s an error. Sounds like intended behavior (maybe)? It’s possible I also tapped the ad teaser inadvertently but I’m pretty sure I didn’t. This was before I had any tea this morning so my tea-deprived brain might be misremembering.

Gorg — There are techniques that allow a website to hijack clicks. NetFlix is kind of notorious for it on the desktop, though they do pop-unders rather than pop-overs. Certain…ahem…websites are more prone to use it than others. As one friend told me when I had a similar issue, visit better sites.
