I’ve just OD’ed on irony

In yet another article about obsessed harassing fuckwit “elevatorgate”, we get an interesting revelation.

In the Google doc briefly viewed by Mother Jones, elevatorgate wrote that he does not use his real name on social media because doing so could make him a target of harassment.

Yeah, we might storify him or photoshop his face into compromising images or send non-stop email notifications to him — you know, the stuff he does to his targets.

After all that linking and roundup of the issues, MoJo didn’t say one word about stalking nor about real-world safety concerns arising from collated online information. I is disappoint.

  2. spiffo says

“A notorious internet troll … has forced a major social-media site to choose between free speech and punishing an alleged harasser.” Uhhhhhhhhhh actually most of these women were petitioning for a Block button. And not “End free speech now!!”

I understand some people have difficulty telling the difference.

At one time, I might have *brain asploded*, but my ironimeter long ago failed under the ceaseless onslaught from Camp Misogyny.

    A brave hero, indeed.

Sorry, is that much sarcasm dangerous after a irony OD?

  5. jenniferphillips says

“If you would like a villain for your piece, I would recommend finding somebody who is actually guilty of something. There are far worse people out there than a man who Storifies people’s tweets.”

    Dear Muslima…

It’s not our broken irony meters that are the problem, it’s that elevatorgate’s stopped working some time ago and he has been operating in the red zone of extreme irony, unaware.

I think the level of asinine wanking regularly achieved on the #FTBullies hashtag has caused me to recalibrate my irony meter to far less sensitive levels, multiple times now, and then comments with a colossal lack of self-awareness like this one come along and still manage to break it. It’s fractally wrong.

Some people refuse to see the difference between Free Speech and “free speech”. Free Speech means you cannot be arrested for saying something, unless it can be shown you wanted your words to result in physical harm to someone else. “free speech” is the last defense of a wicked coward, who, unable to defend their words on their own merits, must hide behind the legality of saying them.

I had a nagging suspicion the article was going to be awful as soon as the issue was framed as “free speech”. Is there no message so horrible, with criticism so minor, that you can’t imagine it being defended by claims of “free speech”? Useless.

    Well said.

Fascinating how harassers hide. Shows just how scared they are of us.

Coming out of lurker mode as I had a minute to breath today.

  11. Pteryxx says

…of course a Mabus would show up on… a thread about online harassment. And every surviving irony meter just redlined.

  12. Ogvorbis: Purveyor of Mediocre Humours! says

And every surviving irony meter just redlined.

Nope. Stuck about 2cm past the red line. Had no idea you could over rev an irony metre.

  13. Bernard Bumner says

    Free speech?!

If the argument is that elevatorgate isn’t harassing anyone because the words are not hir own and are simply collected without any additional (hateful) intent or addition, then how is this an issue of free speech?

To make that argument, one has to admit that the Storify collections are not merely neutral re-postings.

  14. Ingdigo Jump says

Some people defend free speech like the ACLU who puts legal defenses to challenges.

Other like reddit, form hate groups

Awww, I missed it! I did catch one at Ed’s place however so that’ll do me for the day. Interesting how he’s using the “Mabus” name again. Might as well, I suppose, since everyone knows his posts anyway.

And of course, “Elevatorgate” makes Mabus look good.

  16. smhll says

Note the classic use of the “other people are worse” defense near the end of the piece.

As EG defender, Richard Reed says, EG is just collecting the silly things that feminists says. Such is the solid foundation of “investigative journalism” and the actions of a “human rights activist”.

    Fucking coward.

As EG defender, Richard Reed says, EG is just collecting the silly things that feminists says.

Ah, reading comprehension! If EG was putting that kind of (well, any) editorial effort into making it ‘feminist twitter arguments’ versus ‘I am watching you tweet, saving every word’, it would look a lot less creepy and harassing. At least that would have the pretense of approaching the arguments, rather than trying to silence the speaker.

  19. Great American Satan says

I thought EG’s name was known, that he was the Hoggle. I guess I don’t know my history of Slyme.

(snark) Well, isn’t everything that a feminist says silly? See? He has to collect them all.(/snark)

Crap, the first quoted part is just Goodbye Enemy Janine in my post#25. I previewed and everything!

  22. says

The Hoggle is, I’m ashamed to say, one of my fellow Australians, whereas a dispassionate analysis of EG’s targets suggests he hails from the British Isles; the link to some guy in Florida, which was doing the rumour rounds some time ago, seems erroneous.
