This makes me happy in so many ways!

I lived in Minneapolis for a long time, and this is not something a cop there would have predicted in their wildest speculation a few decades ago. That’s one of the reasons this makes me happy!

  2. Louis says

RESULT! Congratulations ladies. And indeed to everyone in those bits of the USA where love is what matters when it comes to marriage.

OMG! Pat Robertson was right! If even the Police Chief is gay, who is left to roust the homosexuals out of the gay bars to stop them from their wicked habits of enjoying their lives? Soon, the gays will take over even the ranks of the self-regarding and self-appointed Christian TV blowhards and then we’ll have nobody left to castigate homosexuals for daring to join the ranks of full citizens! The horror!!!!

This past weekend, my friends Janet and Diane celebrated their marriage at their home in Oregon. The celebrant ended the ceremony with, “By the power not currently granted to me by the state of Oregon, I declare you loving spouses.”

The legal marriage will take place tomorrow in the state of Washington. Hopefully, we can fix this in Oregon next year.

  5. Menyambal --- The Man Who Broke Even at Monte Carlo says

Minnesota nice wins out over Midwestern conservatism.

Congratulations to the happy couple, the good people of Minneapolis, and the good people of Minnesota.

    awww! :-D

    Minnesota has legalized gay marriage.
North Dakota only just (well, 6 years ago) managed to decriminalize cohabitation.

I’m still waiting for that rift in the time-space continuum to open up along the Red River

Those two ladies are truly lovely!

Is there a massive clean-up going on in the streets of Minneapolis from all of the conservative heads that exploded?

  9. says

The only word which fits: Congratulations!

@ David Marjanović, that scans very much like the kind of thing Robin Ince would come up with.

  10. Trebuchet says

I’m sure that God, in a rage, will quickly send a giant lightning bolt, earthquake, and catastrophic flood to strike down the sinners of Minneapolis. Of course, it’ll most like hit someplace in Texas.

Perfect example of how legalizing gay marriage ruins marriage for everyone. Two fewer ladeez for MENZ to marry and have the babeez! The gayz are stealing our womenz! [/Pat]

[me again] Congratulations to both the women in the OP pic. May your partnership be as happy as the one I’ve experienced. And congratulations Minneapolis (and Minnesota) for recognizing that love is important, not the genders of the two in love. Thank you for stopping to refuse reality exists.

Born there over by Riverside Ave, why did I ever leave? Oh wait outside Coke machines have to have heaters in them so the Coke doesn’t freeze up…that’s why.

Yes, exactly! (But I’m still hoping Ellen Degeneres will decide she like driving on both sides of the road.)

Progress on more than one front. Police chiefs never looked like that when I was growing up.

  15. F [is for failure to emerge] says

I expect she makes for a more community-friendly, law-abiding, sensible cop and police chief. We need more of that. And more happy married partners!

  16. Victorious Parasol says

Marriage equality gives me so many opportunities to get sniffly about radiant newlyweds.

Congratulations and many decades of happiness to them.

  17. Azuma Hazuki says

I am fangirling all over this now :) Congratulations to the two, and let’s hope they have a long and happy life together!

  18. Azkyroth Drinked the Grammar Too :) says

I’m mildly surprised police officers don’t have “dress occasion” uniforms like military servicecritters.

  19. frankb says

Lovely couple. Janee’s dress looks awesome, color blocking I believe. Too bad I can’t see more of Holly’s dress.

  20. ck says

My bet is on several months of freezing weather.

Any maybe a blizzard or three. Not to mention spring flooding. Minnesota won’t stand a chance, and surely will be forced to revoke gay marriage due to the wrath of the patron deity.

They make a nice couple, though. Although I get the impression that the woman on the left is less than enthusiastic about being in the photo. I’ve seen that expression before on some of my photo-shy family members who’ve been coerced into pictures they didn’t want to be in.

In context: The first female police chief in the United States, Portland’s Penny Harrington, was appointed in 1985.

‘Grats to Janee and Holly :)

    @Jadehawk

North Dakota only just (well, 6 years ago) managed to decriminalize cohabitation.

… are you serious? How did they even enforce that? How could they prove that two men who lived together were lovers? Or was it just illegal to house-share with someone one of the same sex? X-/ And 6 years ago!?! As in 2007?

Indeed: apparently, she’s part Ojibwe. I’m guessing that people of Native American background aren’t too common among police chiefs.

  24. DLC says

May they live happily ever after. Or, as that’s as unrealistic as me getting married, may their life together have more good parts than bad, and may they spend all the best times together.
