I thought we were friends!

Oh, no! Look at this: Stephanie Zvan is dissing me.

PZ’s talks on biology are okay and stuff. I mean, they’re educational and all, but…don’t tell PZ, but bio just doesn’t sing to me the way it does to a lot of people.

I’m going to curl up in a ball and cry now.

Umm, PZ? When, in your talk, you say that a majority of Christians don’t believe the 6000-year-old Earth idea? How are you getting that? Your next slide has the 48% of the general public believing in a young Earth. There’s no way to get a majority of Christians to be outside that group.

    @3:

Isn’t that from conflating “Ussher was right” and “the Earth may not be _exactly_ 6000 years old, but it’s not billions of years old” ? It’s the difference between explicitly-codified nonsense and something that’s equally nonsensical but more vague.

Good talk, PZ! “The evolution of creationism” is a perfect term – and it can be seen in real-time.

  3. Wowbagger, Designated Snarker says

Oh, come on PZ – everyone knows all FTB bloggers agree on each and every single thing there is. Why, if that wasn’t true, those upstanding skeptics and free speech advocates at the Slymepit would be a bunch of filthy lying scumbags.

  4. Rob Grigjanis says

@3: Haven’t had time to see the video yet, but that looks like it might be majority of Christians worldwide, and 48% of the US public.

    Also, biology is messy.

please don’t send them against Stephanie or me…… please……. oh most wise, benevolent, and powerful underling of our soon to be Cephalopod Overlords.

I used the Oxford comma, that has to count for something, right…., Right !!!!

I don’t think I can stand much more of these Deep Rifts.
I mean really, Rifts was a kinda crappy RPG.

  7. says

“I’m going to curl up in a ball and cry now.”

Oh is that supposed to gain support among your followers? Maybe you should ball up and cry if this feminism extreme kick is what you are going to focus on. Honestly it won’t gain any sympathy form rational, skeptical, freethinkers out there on the internet. Maybe your minion/yes men…women….things will back you but that number I see is shrinking.

  8. says

Wow Caveman73, dehumanising language there, or what (men…women…things). One of these is not like the others. Since wit or self-deprecatory mockery obviously isn’t your forté, why don’t you spend a few millennia evolving into a civilised being. In the mean time though, you’d probably fit in well on YouTube.

  9. Rob says

keresthanatos, you almost made the cut into the ‘safe’ list, but then you just had to use random capitalisation. Sorry, there’s a cephalopod with your name on it.

  10. says

How on Earth would you know the number of *anything* on any blog other than one you run yourself?

Maybe you should ball up and cry if this feminism extreme kick is what you are going to focus on.

Ok, given that feminism is about “the pursuit of equality for women in social, political, and economic arenas”, we have a starting point for whatever issue it is you have. I’m not sure what you mean by “extreme kick”, but it appears you disagree with feminists. Why do you feel that women should be not be equal to men in social, political and economic areas?

TCC doesn’t understand what a troll is or not giving a f*ck IF it was sarcasm…. A-F@CKING-parentally!

I know what a troll is, and unsurprisingly, you prove my point when you say that you don’t care if it was sarcasm. (You also apparently don’t know how to use infixing properly, either.)

It is safe to ignore Caveman73.

That was evident from the start. I’ve said too much already.

  12. Ariaflame, BSc, BF, PhD says

    I agree with Rob @6.
Hard as it is I know for some people from the USA to conceive that there might be Christians, or indeed any other people outside their borders.

  13. says

    @6 & 25:

Wikipedia informs that ~45% of the US population claims to believe in some form of creationism (uncertainty of 5% depending on the sample), while the number of young-Earth creationists is near ~30%. Since 70%-75% of Americans are some form of Christian, only 40% are young-Earth creationists. Then there is another fraction that assert some other form of creationism.

Having listened to the talk, I think PZ was referring only to the US population in both cases. There are obvious comparisons to other countries (e.g. UK with ~20% creationists), but that was not the particular point at that point. If I listened incorrectly, that’s my fault.

  14. carlie says

I heard that as the majority of christian denominations don’t believe in a 6000 year old earth. Most of them don’t take an official position on the earth’s age, even if a lot of their adherents do.

I wonder if that’s because they are concerned that they are losing educated leadership fast enough as it is…

  16. w00dview says

It was nice knowing Stephanie but since PZ always bans people “simply for disagreeing” then I fear she will no longer be blogging at FTB*. Ah, it was good while it lasted. Dang it PZ, why are you such a tyrannical poopyhead?

*Would the slymepitters bravely defend the FREEZE PEACH of Stephanie if she were kicked out of FTB? This is a rheoterical question by the way.

  17. says

echidna, maybe so. But I notice this from that website: “Studies have shown that unfenced rubbish dumps and similar habitats with abundant food contribute significantly to increasing feral cat populations.”

  18. efogoto says

@rturpin: That same website says “The true feral cat does not rely on humans, obtaining its food and shelter from the natural environment. This is unlike semi-feral cats, which live around dump sites, alleys or abandoned buildings, relying on humans by scavenging rubbish scraps.” Stray, semi-feral, and feral cats are all being discussed there.

  19. says

Yeah, so the question becomes how many true feral cats there are. I’ve never heard of or seen any in any of the wild habitats with which I’m a bit familiar. Of course, that resolves to the usual possibilities: a) they’re there, and just hard to find, or b) they do well in some habitats, but not others.
