[Mollies] Restored and retired

The Mollies page is back, and I can now announce that the new winner for the month of June is…

Maureen Brian

And with that, I also announce that the Molly awards are now retired. There will be no new nominations accepted. Everyone who got them can now call themselves Original Mollies.

There will be something new coming up to reward commenters, though. At the end of this month, I’ll put up a post collecting nominations for excellent comments, but instead of a general award to cool people, I want to acknowledge the comments themselves. If you see some particularly perspicacious, funny, thrilling, intelligent comment, make a note of it somewhere. At the end of this month, I’ll ask you to link to, and quote some relevant fragment of, the best comments of the last month. The best comment (and an acknowledgment of the author!) will be enshrined on the Mollies page. I’ve got in mind a new title you’ll be able to wear, but you’re going to have to wait until September to learn more.

Also, note this: of course this award can go to previous Molly winners, and I’m also going to allow repeat winners — the award goes to the good comments, and maybe someone here will be making all the best comments from now on.

Whew. All the administrative stuff is now mostly done. I just got home — this was a grueling journey getting back, what with late night and delayed flights and an overnight stay in Minneapolis and having to take a commercial shuttle back home. Now I can settle back into a sensible routine again.

Oh and while I don’t know what you have in mind for a title, PZ, may I plead that it somehow involves cephalopods? Please?

  2. carlie says

Oooo, I like that idea! I already have a comment in mind, even.

    Also, congrats, Maureen!

  3. says

At last I’m original about something!

Effusive congratulations to Maureen, the Ultimate Molly!

What’s with all this [bracket] stuff in titles? I missed the memo that explained this new convention. Bet it was buried in the midst of PZ’s recent edicts and ukases and bulls and decrees. (We tremble and obey.)

  4. Menyambal --- Sambal's sockpuppet says

    Yay, Maureen!

This comment on the grievance thread is gonna vanish, so I am praising it here:

    PZ Myers @ 6 August 2012 at 12:01 pm:

No editing. No nested comments. Not ever.

  5. chigau (loyal NCO) says

I still like the idea of the OM for long-time meritorious commenting.
Maybe 10 (or whatever) comment-of-the-month awards gets you an OM.

or is that as silly as it sounds?

    Congrats Maureen!!!

I like the idea of “Comment of the Month.” Skepchick has (had?) a similar “Comment of the Week” feature

Skepchick’s comment of the week feature was gone for a time, but it’s back now.

  7. SteveV says

    Well done, Maureen!

(Mind you, I still suspect that you may have hand in this last kerfuffle – you get nominated and the Order is abolished. Pull up the ladder Jack!)

  8. KG says

Congratulations, Maureen – you can now style yourself LOM, FOM, or UOM, whichever you prefer!

  9. Brownian says

I hope this thing isn’t chocolate. I’m’a set myself up with some cushy corporate speaking gigs, pass it around for the participants to touch.

  10. A. R says

I believe someone once said something to the effect of: “The only people who are really remembered for doing something are the ones who do it first, last, and the best.” Congratulations Maureen, and congratulations to all of the other Mollies

  11. says

Pfft, the mollies have been redundant since April 2009. Well, they took a resurgence in June 2009, but still, I like this new idea.

    Well done, Maureen

  12. carlie says

Kel! May I pounce on you and give you a hug? I have not seen your comments in quite a while. :)

  13. Antiochus Epiphanes says

Maureen: I have always liked your work.

Because Teh OM is now a closed-membership group, and in the spirit of a fresh start, I’d like to turn mine in.

Unfortunately, my brother is holding it until I can pay him back for getting my car out of impound. As soon as I can scrape together the dough, I’ll give it back.

  14. says

Kel! May I pounce on you and give you a hug? I have not seen your comments in quite a while. :)

Of course, pounce away. I’ve been taking a bit of a break from this place, though I’ve made the occasional comment here and there. I’m sure anything I could have added was said by 10 or 20 people in any given thread. :)

  15. Wowbagger, Titillated Victorian Gentleman says

I mostly agree with Kel’s sentiment, though it’s obvious the real peak for Mollies was January 2009.

    Congrats, Maureen!

I find it funny that I picked the peak as the month before I got it, while you picked the month that you got it. ;)

I’m not a big believer in false modesty – or any other kind, for that matter…

    :)

  18. Crip Dyke, MQ, Right Reverend Feminist FuckToy of Death & Her Handmaiden says

congratulations, Maureen. A nice way to round out the Mollies.

  19. Azkyroth, Former Growing Toaster Oven says

Yeah, congratulations. It’ll be interesting to see how this turns out.

  20. dianne says

If the name of the new comment recognition isn’t already decided, may I suggest “comment of the Ivins”? I never liked that the OMolly was named after Molly Ivins’ first name. It’s not the Alfred Prize or the Joseph Prize, why should it be the Order of Molly?

  21. John Morales says

Rey, there was a time (before my time) when OM meant scary-smart.

(Such shark-jumping as there may have been was well before your time)

  22. strange gods before me ॐ says

So I’m not the only one who thinks the Mollies jumped the shark when I got one.

    heh

  23. says

    SG:

    heh

That was a little painful to read. Not because you got mollied, but because of all the people I enjoyed reading who are on the missing list these days.

  24. strange gods before me ॐ says

Yeah, I felt the same way.

Well I’m glad maureenbrian is in.

But I’m afraid I might be too melancholy for one last ritual orgy.

But I’m afraid I might be too melancholy for one last ritual orgy.

I second that emotion. I do like the idea of comment of the month, but I’m sad about the Mollies. I’d like them to continue, there are so many people I looked forward to nominating and seeing OMed. Even if they weren’t monthly, that would be okay. I just wish they weren’t gone.

  26. Louis says

So I’m not the only one who thinks the Mollies jumped the shark when I got one.

Definitely not. I might be leading with my chin as per usual, self deprecation is a British art after all, but honoured as I am to have been OMed, I also thought that when you got an OM they jumped the shark…

…oh…wait…I meant when I got one. Sorry, erm, Freudian typo. Honest. No, really. I’m just going to go over there for a bit…

    Louis

    SG: wow, time travel.
this comment made me lol in front of my students taking their final exam. embarrassing.

[hmm, no direct link? I meant #60 on that archived thread]
