Schwaaaaaaag!

I know exactly what you’re thinking right now. The Reason Rally is less than a month away, and you have nothing to wear. You want to be fashionable, and you also want to declare your allegiance, affiliations, and your weird obsessions publicly. Whatever can you do?

Go to the Pharyngula store. We have new stuff! It will be ready in time for the rally (although you might have to pick them up at the event).

First, look at this t-shirt. You must have it.

It’s like the emblem Batman should have chosen. It will inspire fear and curiosity and weird monkey-like happy thoughts in all who behold you wearing it.

And then, you know, you’re going to be hanging out on the Mall, listening to raucous music and ferocious firebrands, and you’re going to get thirsty. Do you have your travel mug with you? You need it! It will be awesome and thirst-quenching!

There are other options. If you favor a more subtle, muted look, you can still purchase the lovely octopus t-shirt, and if you’re on a budget and can’t afford the full glorious PZ regalia, you can always get the button.

There. Your apparel needs are all taken care of. Buy now. Even if you can’t attend the Reason Rally, you can wear these and hold the mug as you watch us vilified on Fox News from the boring safety of your home.

Hmmm. I think I need to buy one of those shirts for my mom.

You’re such a tool of the commercial materialistic capitalist complex.

Yes, yes, but you’re going to have to wait on any profit from being such a tool, thanks to your advertising the Octopi Wall Street T-shirt, which I just bought. The Pharyngula T-shirt and travel mug will have to wait a week or two.

I cannot abide with the cuteness overload.

Also, I remember when Paul Meyers was all about the science. Why can’t it be like I want it to be?

Fox will only vilify “man’s reason,” as the “Creation Museum” calls it. God’s reason, which apparently is very unlike our own, is considered to be good.

You can know it by noticing that it doesn’t really make sense to a human, yet you can know that it makes sense to God because, uh, some humans say that is so.

Myers. You’re such a tool of the commercial materialistic capitalist complex.

No, that can’t be it. Most tools are, at least occasoinally, useful. Though some do come with batteries or cords. But I don’t think of PZ as a power tool, y’know?

  5. F says

    PZ Myers @5:

Oh, it was you who buried Paul? He was the walrus, or was it that other guy? I don’t suppose you did a bit of post-mortem prior to interment to find out.

Strictly bonus: Thanks to the third image, I now can visually interpret the octopus icon-thingumie properly. Hooray for everything!

There. Your apparel needs are all taken care of.

Really, that’s all I need? If you say so. I was thinking I might need pants for this event. I guess I will be attending the Rally wearing only a t-shirt and button. I hope its a really big button, or it won’t be concealing much.

  7. Dave, the Kwisatz Haderach says

Brilliant! “Chibi PZ” tee up top and the ever-stylish “Evil Little Thing” shirt wrapped around the naughty bits. Now that’s a fashion statement!

  8. Moggie says

Think what a dramatic effect it will have to have a swarm of pantsless atheists mooning the gawping Christians on the mall!

Why do the words “deep rifts” spring to mind?

  9. says

The katakana font is cute and it all looks authentic. Me likes.

Of course the average Japanese person wouldn’t know what faringura is. The technical term is 咽頭胚 (ōtōhai), though not sure how many would understand that either…

Well, obviously in this case the shirt isn’t referring to a phylotypic stage embryo, but to a blog, so surely either romaji or katakana would be more appropriate than translating the name.

    Nice shirt Professor ^^

And I like how you posted the inevitable “you’ve sold out, dude!” yourself.

Oh man I wanna go to Japan!!!! Someone adopt me! :(

I hear the streets of Harajuku have a particularly tasty Pistachio Gelato, I must find it.

Well, if anyone wants a (somewhat shrunken) men’s size M of the gray octopus shirt for cheaper (possibly free), shoot an email to reyfox at chameleon dot net, and we can make sweet transactional music together.

    That reminds me!

I’ve got some great ideas for atheist merchandise, but I don’t particularly want to toss those ideas out into the public eye without a patent secured first.

My biggest problem right now is that I don’t know very much at all about the promotional merchandising business (or any business, for that matter).

Any ideas on where I might begin?

    “Thank you” in advance.

I just love the kawaii PZ and cephalopod art work.

Alas, I am poor, so no Reason Rally or swag for me. Still like the stuff, though, and would totes buy some if I could.

  16. says

    you forgot a letter: ファリンギュラ

Either is fine. I’d probably have gone with /gyu/ myself, but the /gu/ choice is still acceptable.

For “Caligula”, both variants are used, too:

    カリグラ・カリギュラ

    Yes. :-)

Sadly, tragically—no. Not until the shirts are offered in 3x, they’re not.

    @BaldySlaphead – No, I thought that too. Coincidentally, I am a baldy slaphead…coincidence?

  22. Matrim says

What does it say about me that I had to stare blankly at the katakana for about a minute dully muttering the sounds they stand for I realized that (shockingly enough) “Fya-ri-n-gu-la” means “Pharyngula”?

Probably says I need to get to sleep before 4:30 in the morning…

  23. Matrim says

@17 – However, since it’s a proper name of a blog, it would still be written in kana.

Besides, the point isn’t whether or not Japanese people know what the word pharyngula means. Hell, I’m more or less surprised when I meet people who know that there are names for the various embryonic stages…

  24. says

    Fya-ri-n-gu-la” means “Pharyngula”

    You’re reading it wrong. It’s Fa-ri-N-gu-ra

@17 – However, since it’s a proper name of a blog, it would still be written in kana.

This is actually trickier than you might think, but since I agree with you in this instance I’ll spare us all a TL;DR about how different kinds of proper names are usually translated into Japanese.

Besides, the point isn’t whether or not Japanese people know what the word pharyngula means.

Of course it’s worth considering how Japanese people would react to it. Otherwise it would just be yet another instance of western exoticism. Just contrast this design with one that puts Japanese gibberish on it in order to “look cool”

Hell, I’m more or less surprised when I meet people who know that there are names for the various embryonic stages…

Yes, but my argument would be that 咽頭胚 (intōhai) (sorry for the typo above) consisting of the characters throat-head-embryo would at least give them a very dim idea what it was. But ultimately since the Blog is not really all about embryos, I’d go with the katakana transliteration myself…

  25. stephenmortimer says

    Hey PZ,

When your book becomes available, is there any chance you can offer a bundle package that includes a signed copy of your book, t-shirt, button, etc.? I would totally squee if this were so! (a disturbing image for a bearded man such as myself…)

And could it also be available to us Canucks? Carl Zimmer came out with a signed book deal through amazon, but it wasn’t available to us Canadians ಠ_ಠ

This was his book BTW (http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Viruses-Carl-Zimmer/dp/0226983358)

  26. says

Yes, but my argument would be that 咽頭胚 (intōhai) (sorry for the typo above) consisting of the characters throat-head-embryo would at least give them a very dim idea what it was.

I’d go with “pharynx-embryo”, since 咽頭 is a technical word meaning the throat/pharynx.

But ultimately since the Blog is not really all about embryos, I’d go with the katakana transliteration myself…

Yeah, they made the right decision on that, though whether they should have gone with ファリングラ or ファリンギュラ is basically a matter of opinion. I also prefer the second, but I still bought one of the buttons. :P
