I thought that was the natural state of all philosophers?

John Wilkins is an unemployed philosopher right now, so he’s looking for donations to tide him over. Give him a little assistance if you can, especially since he’s threatening to have a god take him to heaven if we don’t cough up. Let’s not give a damned agnostic an excuse to wobble over the correct answer on that one.

Don’t leave any comments over there, though! He fears and hates the Horde, ’cause he ain’t got one.

I too was unaware of real work being done by “real Philosophers” or that it was a financially rewarding career not with standing Douglas Adams’s creation of Broom-fondle and Magic Thighs

I can’t help it but the guy pictured is working on a really great comb over
myself I am growing a rather large forehead.

Done, but also thank you for bringing him to my attention. I think I know some one in meatspace who will really be glad to get that link too.

    Done.
I met John once at the AMNH some years ago. I don’t always agree with what he says but I like to hear (read) him say it.

If holding oneself for ransom worked for Oral Roberts then it should work for John Wilkins.

PZ, although you are In Error and A Militant Hating Atheist, you are also One Hell of a Guy. I am proud to be your Chamberlainist Wishy Washy Accommodationist Friend…

’tis. But we prefer to be unnatural, if we can . . .

What’s that now? Militants get a lot of love around here, I’m sure any casual reader of the blog knows that. No militant haters here.

Why is it desirable to accommodate the idea that we should abdicate our rationality in favor of fantasy?

  9. says

Thank you, thank you. I like to think that I brought this to PZ’s attention by posting it in the Endless Thread. And a dozen others probably told him in other ways.

What are you people thinking? We’re supposed to help out an NBA player who brags about sleeping with tens of thousands of women, and who’s also a Quaker? Ridiculous!

What a weird country, a rich country where you lose health and home as soon as you’re out of a job. Do something about it. I’m glad John is getting some donations, but right now he’s living Ron Paul’s wet dream. You don’t actually want it to be that way, no?

  12. Susan Silberstein says

It is true that John has no Horde; I suspect he may not want one. He does, however, have friends, associates, and readers. There isn’t a lot of “me, too” stuff going on at Evolving Thoughts and it is exceedingly rare for those of us who are atheists to announce that we want to destroy religion. Different culture. YMMV.

I’ve been following him since I met him in NY many years ago. It’s always nice meet someone who not only understands the glimmer of an idea you are having but can show you a half-dozen well-thought-out variations on the theme. In my case it was the concept of speciation, on which he was just published a book which I cannot afford to buy yet. http://www.ucpress.edu/book.php?isbn=9780520271395

I agree don’t the state do anything in the US? Your country desperately needs a political left. preferably a hardcore socialist party.

Not to put a dampener on your academic condescension, but actually employment rates for philosophers (at least here in the UK) are only slightly below average. We philosophers are certainly much better off than computer scientists, engineers, and mass communications people. We’re even better off than physicists and mathematicians.

Tell him to write a book and if it looks good I’ll buy it. I don’t typically pay philosophers on spec.

When I met John Wilkins and asked him about agnosticism over atheism (I was genuinely curious), he complained to PZ about bringing his minions to argue on PZ’s behalf. Even off the internet, the horde gets to John Wilkins… ;)
