Men are in the forefront of the misogyny issue because of legislation and enforcement of laws, however women in the Muslim community are the staunchest supporters of the status quo. They raise their sons to follow it and do not believe their daughters need an education unless it helps in finding their idea of a better husband. They are not fleeing their marriages or family and are the strongest supporters of veiling. Also, it is easy to believe the polls saying they want more sharia, not less. Along with all this they vehemently deny they are ignorant or brainwashed, and to prove it can go on endlessly, with facts and figures to back it up, about the degenerate West and all the harm it has done and is doing in the world as well as all the good Islam has done. Women in the Muslim community, not men, are the main obstacle to overcoming the misogynistic laws and practices.

Deborah, above you say “women, not men, are the obstacle to overcoming misogyny in Muslim communities”. I don’t like the language of saying that women are the problem, when surely what you mean is that the regressive attitudes of many women are the problem.

But that aside, surely there are both many men as well as many women with regressive attitudes. And we all strive to change all of their minds! And with groups like FEMEN, it is women leading the way in this important struggle!

Maryam, thank you for the wonderful interview!

The adjective “regressive,” much less the phrase “the regressive attitudes of many …” is not placed before the word “men” every time they are referred to when discussing misogyny. Anyway, my experience has been with women in the Muslim community, and has been almost all-inclusive.

      • Tyle says

Hi Deborah, you make a good point – if it is only the women who have the bad attitudes then why not just say “women” for shorthand. What I meant was shouldn’t we say that regressive attitudes are the problem, not that one gender or the other is the problem. Especially since there is plenty of misogyny among the males as well.

But now I realize that this was just a distraction from your point, so I apologize for that. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Maybe we can agree on this – whether women are the main problem or not, they will certainly be the solution. I think Maryam demonstrates this beautifully and admirably.

Cause there is no punishment under sharia for disobeying your husband right? or undermining his authority with your children? People have to make a tough choice, risk personal harm or harm to their children by disobeying and fighting the system, or just try to make things work. To blame the women for their being treated like livestock is absurd. Not like they have any chance of voting for change cause their opinions are worth shit compared to that of a man. Lets say they do flee their marriage, to where? The likelihood their family will accept them is minimal, no support for their kids or themselves. It’s always easier to tell people what they should do rather than actually have to do it.

Although I agree that Islamism is the worst not only for women but for men also..The cutting of limbs for small infractions is totally unbearable and other Sharia Laws which should be outlawed!
It is time to examine the Three major relgions..First Judaism out which came Christianity and then Islam and they have many things in common and one is Misogyny..
We all need to join hands as human brothers and sisters to erradicate horrible laws and mindsets that poison our World and concentrate on repairing the damage done to our Mother Earth through our ignorance, stupidity and sheer greed before it is too late!
Time to examine what we are doing to this Planet, to our children, to the animals and all sentient beings..Enough fairy tale myths..The mythical man invented God will not come and rescue us from impending disaster that awaits us..Enough wars to feed the small Elite that feeds on them! Let’s look at each other as part of a huge hand where the fingers are all different, with very specific functions and yet they all belong to the same hand..We all need each other! On that note, here are the lyrics of one of my favourite songs…Please World, make peace with each other for our future generations!
How many roads most a man walk down
Before you call him a man ?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand ?
Yes, how many times must the cannon balls fly
    Before they’re forever banned ?
The answer my friend is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind.

Yes, how many years can a mountain exist
Before it’s washed to the sea ?
Yes, how many years can some people exist
Before they’re allowed to be free ?
Yes, how many times can a man turn his head
Pretending he just doesn’t see ?
The answer my friend is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind.

Yes, how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky ?
Yes, how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry ?
Yes, how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died ?
The answer my friend is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind.

If you think it’s strange to find Muslim women defend misogyny, may I remind you of how American slave owners were able to brainwash black slaves into thinking their enslavement was well deserved?
