Iran State TV Plagiarizes Modern Family

I actually didn’t catch this myself, because I avoid Iranian State TV like plague, and I avoid it during Ramadan like the Black Death of 1348. I don’t remember the last time it was on and was showing it anything other than presidential election debates or football which my father watches. However, Iranian TV and cinema are very VERY notorious for plagiarizing foreign media, and Modern Family is just the latest victim. Via Times:

Fans of the ABC series Modern Family may never have laid eyes on the Iranian TV series Haft Sang [Seven stones] — but they’ve seen it, nonetheless.

Haft Sang is a near-perfect recreation of Modern Family, shot frame for frame with the same stage directions, props and sight gags. But one thing is missing from the show in the conservative Islamic Republic: there’s not a glimpse of any gay characters like Mitch and Cam from Modern Family.

See a comparison clip above being shared on social media. No, you’re not seeing double. You’re just seeing what happens when copyright laws go flying out of the window.

And this is a comparison video:

I don’t speak Persian so I have no idea how direct the dialogue is translated, but why is Haley’s counterpart a boy who’s hanging out in his room with another boy in such a way as to make mom suspicious? Either the dialogue must have been changed or there’s a subtext there that seems like it wouldn’t go over well on Iranian State TV.
