An Image of the Iranian English a High School Textbook

This is just to show you how omnipresence religion is in Iran, I give you two images from the Iranian textbook. These photos were shared by a friend of mine on Facebook. You usually assume that an English textbook is not an opportunity to indoctrinate children and teenagers, and should be concerned with teaching English, but the Iranian regime disagrees. And all textbooks are like that to some degree, as all books open with a picture and a saying of Khomeini.

@1. Isn’t the english for Allah just “god” anyhow?

  2. StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return! says

Allah is the best word so ..

The little children were Allah their mother.

(Hmm .. make sense with some punctuation perhaps? The little children were .. Allah! Their mother .. something?)

He spent the day Allah fixing the car.

(Maybe that should be reordered for phonetic casual usage : He spent All’ah the day fixing the car?)

Did you Allah any letters that month.

Please Allah this man to his chair. (Is it an electric chair I wonder?)

It is not my Allah to clean the room.

    Yeah, maybe not.

In all those sentences pretty much the only way “allah” works is as a profanity and exclaimation making the sentence jump off topic and sound rather strange.

  3. StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return! says

Or to use in context :

    1) “The little children were ..were! Allah! Their mother .. It couldn’t be? She wasn’t the woman who .. could do that was she? DNA test and examination for possible mutagens are required pronto+ my dear assistent! if this is true we’re in for big trouble!”

    2) He spent the day Allah fixing the car. Adding extra iron like those iron chariots, deliberately papering it through with verses from Salman Rushdie novels and a few of the darkest suggestions and magic spells from very strange gods indeed as his spine chilling book of blasphemy had suggested. At midnight the car would be ready at last -and he was sure quote Allah proof indeed just right for this mission to take on and defeat the Islamist God in its stronghold.

    3) “Did you .. ? Allah! Any letters that month?” One letter, just one, would be it would take to give away the fact that had not been in the middle of the relativistic journey to Beta Coma Berencis* after all. That would be physically impossible when travelling at a speed where one month meant mere seconds. A hoax! The letter if correctly dated meant it had to be a hoax!”

    4) “Please, Allah! This man to his chair. His royal chair of Holy Emperor Supreme Shah of Zubenelgenubi and surrounding star systems.” They led Khomenei Clone the Five Hundred and Fifty Fifth of the Royal House of Arrakis Five to the diamond encrusted peacock feather cushioned throne. He sat and was in a second crushed to nothingness by the naked singularity some a conspirator of the Lberationist plot had inserted in the chair for just that moment using the Technobabble corporations stolen and still utterly mysterious if ever so effective teleporterdrive.

    5) “It is not my ..” Allah! To clean the room. That’s what I’d forgotten to do! The room with all its tell tale evidence that had to be exactly as it had appeared before my tryst with sweet Fatima before Sheherazhade – if that really was her name – discovered the other girl had been there! I clutched my ample bosom in shock, inhaled deeply and reached for my mobile hoping against hope my beloved sister would do her sister one more desperately needed favour and fast!

+ Um, bonus Italian (?) loanword for characterisation and a change here.

for that actual star’s astrophysical details. Quite a promising destination actually.

PS. Do Muslims actually use “Allah” as a swear word / verbal exclaimation for emphasis in the same sort of way Westerners use “god” – I’m assuming here that they do but could well be wrong.

I thought there was a certain irony in the footnote explaining that the year of Mohammed’s birth is expressed Anno Domini (Latin for “Year of the Lord”; the “Lord” being Jesus Christ).
