Kirk Cameron supports female slavery

Kirk Cameron supports female slavery March 9, 2012

I keep seeing calls for Kirk Cameron to take back his homophobic comments, and articles about how awful what he said was. I’m glad for the progress all this shows is being made in the advancement of LGBTQ rights, but I would like to add something as long as we’re calling for Kirk Cameron to repudiate things.

I want to call on Kirk Cameron to cut his ties with Doug Phillips, the Christian Patriarchy leader who has proudly said:

“Daughters aren’t to be independent. They’re not to act outside the scope
of their father. As long as they’re under the authority of their fathers, fathers have the ability to nullify or not the oaths and the vows. Daughters can’t just go out
independently and say, ‘I’m going to marry whoever I want.’ No. The father has
the ability to say, ‘No, I’m sorry, that has to be approved by me.’”

Phillips teaches that a woman is never to be out from under male authority no matter her age or marital condition, and that being under male authority includes complete submission and obedience, because God speaks to women through their male authorities. This is nothing short of slavery. In addition, Doug Phillips’ organization, Vision Forum, sells and promotes the books of influential dominionist thinker Rousas Rushdoony, who advocates restoring Old Testament law and stoning anyone who happens to be gay.

While Cameron would probably disavow any acceptance of these ideas, until he cuts his ties with Doug Phillips and repudiates Phillips’ views, he is through his support of Phillips and his projects endorsing not only class citizenship for LGBTQ individuals but also female slavery. And it’s about time someone held him accountable for that.
