I see Martian people… ALL THE TIME.

I don’t think I’ve ever fully elucidated my thoughts on the possible existence of extraterrestrial life, have I?  Well, I’ll put off my Python evolution project a little longer, and write about it now — no time like the present.

Assume first, as I do, that the abiogenesis (or “primordial ooze”) theory is correct.  For those of you not in the know, this theory suggests that life on Earth began when certain organic chemicals organized through known means into amino acids, which in turn self-organized into proteins, which in turn used lipids to form the first cell barriers, and gained the ability to pull the components necessary to catalyze RNA from their surroundings.  These became the first proto-cells, which populated the world (in the RNA-world theory at least), and competed with one another for these organic molecules and in self-replication naturally selected for structures that would be better equipped at obtaining these molecules before their competitors.

Our long nightmare is nearly over.

I’m getting an account with HostPapa.  Besides them buying green energy, they also have a great plan for the same price I was paying at Webserve, with the option to host unlimited domains and use unlimited space (within reason, whatever that means), and it appears as though I can actually turn off PHP Safe mode (shock of shocks!).  Also, their technical support exists, which is a big plus (I checked this out before buying, this time).  Sadly, due to all the fees and such, I have absolutely no idea how likely it is that I’m going to get any of my money back from Webserve, and also equally sadly, it’s possible that if something goes wrong with HostPapa I won’t get any money back at all.  However, I am holding out for a miracle in that they won’t suck.

As soon as I get my hosting package’s details I’ll move the site, then I’ve got some scientific, political and current event news to rant about.

The “screen resolution” of the universe

I don’t know a lot about quantum physics.  I can’t tell you anything about matter or energy at Planck-scale sizes, outside of what I understand on Wikipedia (which isn’t much).  I am, however, fascinated with the idea that the universe might actually have a basic resolution and matter-unit (or wave-unit, as the case may be) that it operates at, and how it ties into my other beliefs about the nature of the universe and what we as humans can learn.

Hacking the Wii

Over the weekend, while I wasn’t working on splicing together and editing a video for work (how I got roped into doing that, I’ll never know), I dug my Nintendo Wii out of the box I had so foolishly packed it in — why I thought it would stay in there for long, I don’t know — and proceeded to install a new channel on it, the Homebrew Channel.  This is a third-party channel that lets you play homebrew games, emulators, and other applications (e.g. Linux, media players, etc.) on your Wii. Yes, you can play a lot of older games without installing this hack and the emulators by buying them on the Virtual Console, but if you already own them, why pay for them again, especially if they aren’t even available on the shop (e.g. the entire Mega Man original series)?  Below the fold, the nitty gritty of the hack, and a video of it in action.

Life, the universe, and everything (or, I’m An Atheist And So Can You!)

I feel the need to warn you right now, this is going to be an extremely long post, and I earnestly hope it spurs some honest and frank discussion amongst you, my loyal few readers.  And I’m going to try not to make the Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy references too prevalent.  This all started on reading an interview with Richard Dawkins, prominent author and noted atheist.  Read it if you want, but it’s long too, and I’d prefer you read me first.  I worked hard on this!

In this post, I’m going to do something that, normally, I dislike, when I am on the receiving end.  I’m going to proselytize.  I will try to turn your fundamental beliefs regarding the nature of the universe on their ear.  I am going to attempt to convince you that you are an atheist.

Fun with Bash, and converting file formats under Linux

As you may or may not already know, I’ve been biking to and from work whenever I can (and when my body permits) as of late.  With gas at 138 cents a litre, who can blame me?  I did the first few trips without music, but I have to say, having something to set the rhythm of my pedalling to makes things so much easier.

Only problem was, my music collection was in .ogg file format.
