Sorting your video game preferences

Can’t deal with all the news of the past few days. So instead, I’m taking online quizzes and distracting myself with my self care regimen of video game consumption.

Sorting 100+ games in order of preference is no easy task, but it can be done with some perseverance. Go here for the quiz. My results below the fold. The top 20 are not surprising at all. I’d maybe sort some of the ties, of course, but the results are really uncanny otherwise.

Lots of good games there, but… no Heroes of Might and Magic III? No Total Annihilation? Jagged Alliance II? FTL, Streets of Rage II, Samurai Shodown / Spirits II?? This test sucks!

  2. 2

Wellll, it had 120ish games. There were 713 licensed NES games in North America alone. There’s no way anything like this could be comprehensive without being expansive to the point of ridiculousness. But, yes, there are many games I have very fond memories of that aren’t represented. Crystalis, or River City Ransom, or Shadowgate, again thinking only of NES games. Dune 2, for PC. (Why specifically Age of Empires 2?)

As it stands, of the games presented, this list is absolutely accurate. That Undertale hit #1 is perfect.

Regarding AoE 2, I think it is listed alone on this list for basically the same reason I mentioned HoMM 3: they both happened to take an especially large leap forwards not only in terms of technology, but also in design and execution, and as a result tend to be especially cherished by those that played them back then.

What a surprisingly good list sorter. My list was also pretty accurate, at least at the top slots:

    1 Planescape: Torment
    2 Baldur’s Gate II
    3 Star Wars: KOTOR
    4 The Witcher 3
    5 Fallout: New Vegas
    6 Mass Effect
    7 Deus Ex
    8 Skyrim
    9 Dragon Age: Origins
    10 Diablo II
    11 BioShock Infinite
    12 Starcraft
    13 Portal
    14 Mass Effect 2
    15 BioShock
    16 Portal 2
    17 Mass Effect 3
    18 Fallout 3
    19 Warcraft III
    20 Shadow of the Colossus
    20 Red Dead Redemption

    I’m not sure about this…

    1 Star Wars: KOTOR
    2 Morrowind
    3 Dragon Age: Origins
    4 Baldur’s Gate II
    5 Skyrim
    6 Pokemon X/Y
    7 Mass Effect
    8 Mass Effect 2
    9 Fallout 3
    10 Final Fantasy VIII
    11 Fallout: New Vegas
    12 Oblivion
    12 The Witcher 3
    12 Binding of Isaac Rebirth
    12 Metal Gear Solid 2
    12 Resident Evil
    12 BioShock Infinite
    12 Resident Evil 4
    12 Paper Mario
    20 Tetris
    21 Pokemon Gold/Silver
    22 Mass Effect 3
    23 Pokemon Red/Blue
    24 Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Oblivion is the only one at number 12 that I picked. I haven’t even played the rest of the rest of the number 12s, let alone picked any of them. I’d rate Tetris above all of them because I have no interest in them. The top 10 are pretty close but I’d put Oblivion above Fallout 3 and definitely above Fallout New Vegas.

I’m guessing I’m a fairway out of date here but I’d list my faves as

    1) Ayrton Senna’s superMonaco GP
    2) Mortal Kombat (the original)
    3) Streets of Rage ..I think that’s what it was called anyhow.
    4) Alex Kidd … and the something or other (not actual name) back on Sega master-system (?) pre megadrive.
    5) Road Rash think twas with a motorbike and being able to bash up cops and fellow competiootrs..

But afraid those all go back along , lo-oong waay. All but one of those on the Sega megadrive thingamajig so not sur eif they even qualify here. Still.

According to the list, here are my top five video games:
    1) FFVII
    2) Journey
    3) Baldurs Gate II
    4) Skyrim
    5) Resident Evil

Sadly there were lots of my favorite games missing: Space Quest, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (Intellivision), Counterstrike, X-Com (the original), Privateer, Eye Of The Beholder, Doom 1 and 2, Ultima V, Starflight. If I sat and thought about it, I could probably come up with dozens of great old games that aren’t anywhere near that list. Mind you, I’m old. And that’s the problem with video games: there are so many of them and what constitutes a “great” game varies from person to person.

Sadly there were lots of my favorite games missing

I hear ya – I would have rated Star Control 2 and Betrayal at Krondor within the first five, but they weren’t even mentioned, same as many excellent Sierra and LucasArts adventures and many many others. I don’t know whether I should lament my old age, or pity the young for considering Smash Bros as the height of gaming.
