Geek Girl Con: Carol Corps (the Carol Danvers fandom)!

I did a special guest run-in to talk about the skeptical/atheist communities and inclusion at the amazing Sigrid Ellis’ behest at Geek Girl Con last weekend. She posted the audio of the panel to Youtube — here it is.

I seriously had no idea there was a fandom for Carol Danvers, but I’m totally sold. I’ve been nattering on Twitter about why there isn’t already a Captain Marvel movie yet, what with Phase 2 dealing with space-stuff heavily. Dammit, it’s time for SWORD to exist, and for the Ms. Marvel cycle to get out of the way so we get our powerhouse colonel taking her rightful place in the Marvel cinematic pantheon. She outranks Captain America, so she should get more movies than him, right? RIGHT?

How could there not be a fandom for earth’s mightiest hero?
Also, she’s a colonel, not a corporal. I think corporal is a lower rank than captain… but I’ve never been in the military and I’m too lazy to google it right now. We definitely need some dynamic Danvers demonstrations in the next phase from Marvel, though, especially now that she’s in what should be their flagship comic. (Seriously, they’re called Marvel, she’s the captain of Marvelosity, it just makes sense!)

The worst part of it is, I bet I miswrote it because of “Carol CORPS”. The still on the video even has “Col. Carol Danvers” so even if I didn’t know, a big clue was staring me in the face. Bah. I hate it when I make mistakes like that.

    That’s rankist!

And not a terribly helpful argument, either – for by that logic, Marshal Law should get the most movies, followed by General “Thunderbolt” Ross. And then there are at least a dozen colonels in the Marvel universe, so it would go by date of seniority – so Colonel Klaue and Colonel Strauheim would be ahead of Colonel Danvers, still.

I don’t think the world is ready for a Rulk movie.
