Erock does Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger is probably my favorite RPG of all time.

I bought it on the day it came out, having to sell half my SNES collection to afford it, and I sucked the marrow out of that game. I played through to all 14 endings, I got probably every secret, I did every side quest. My characters were all level 100 (Star Star). I could beat Lavos in one round, by the time I finally bored of it.

I still pick it up now and again, and grind through the opening Festival, doing everything I can to get Chrono acquitted at the later trial. I was convinced by the urban legends as a kid that it was possible to avoid the whole prison portion of the game. Of course, no, it isn’t possible, but urban legends in video games are still fascinating in their grip even decades later.

    Absolutely brilliant game.

I find it interesting that the sprite-based games hold up so well. It’s much easier for me to pick up and play the old NES/SNES RPGs than the early Playstation ones.

I’m right there with you on the Chrono Trigger love. Did you ever pick up and go through the endings for Chrono Cross? It’s not on the level of CT, but I do think it was an awesome game and a bit under appreciated.

Yeah, but Xenogears had giant robots, so..I dunno, a point or something goes here. Honesty time, I never played Chrono Trigger. Too busy with Super Metroid. Yeah, I know, I know.

Well, the art of producing those 16bit sprite games was fully mature and established, while the art of producing the new 3D games was in its infancy. Too many of the early 3D games were simply of the “wow, isn’t it cool we can do this in THREE D now?” type, which date quickly.

Also, I think sprite-based graphics, if done well, have a sort of timelessness to them, while the early 3D stuff ran so quickly into uncanny valley issues.

I think the max level is 99, not 100. Also, technically it is possible in a new game+ to avoid prison (as well as the whole fricking game) by taking the wrong teleporter at the fair.

And have Crono solo the final boss with a mop.

    Almighty janitor indeed!

I think this is one of the reasons that Xenogears still holds up compared to some of the others of its generation, since it’s a fusion of the established system while using 3D in a place where it can succeed — in the mech designs. Plus Xenogears has a crazy good soundtrack, imho anyhow.

I never got tired of setting up those crazy long combos either. I would appreciate a new take on that system.
