Nova Scotia wine, after dark

My wife works at a vineyard owned by Jöst (pronounced Yost, to rhyme with “most”). We’ve had a few bottles of this — it’s not horrible. So, apparently, has Jay Leno.

Such feminist misandry — making wine out of foreskins! Those castrating Canucks! Someone call the Canadian consulate and have them issue a warning about roving bands of feminists taking over our country!

What’s that, dear? They “ferment four varieties of grapes in the skins”? Well, okay, slightly clever. Gimmicky but clever.

Do you need a mohel to open the bottle?

When we ran out of wine at a decidedly low-rent (but fun!) wine and cheese party, we had one of the cabbies bootleg us a big bottle of the Jost Chablis. Perhaps it’s just because we were three sheets and a mattress to the wind, but it was pretty darn good. I’ll have to see if this is available here in Ontario.

Having grown up in NS I wondered how I never heard of this wine or place? Then I realized that back then if it wasn’t beer or rum I wasn’t interested. And the closest I ever got to that area was Debert or Pictou.

The next time I get back I’ll give it a try.

My problem with wines produced in non-Californian North America is they all have that foxy concord grape taste, the goût à Welches.

It actually *should* sound more like “Yurst”, if it’s from German.I like their sangria.

Actually, do you get New Brunswick wine in Nova Scotia?

The Magnetic Hill Winery out of Moncton makes a strawberry rhubarb wine called “Evangeline Blanc” which is pretty amazing.

LOVE Nova Scotia! Have only been there once but spent 8 days and visited as many places as I could; unfortunately, I didn’t get to a winery. Next time I shall make it a priority.
