Gamers For Godlessness gameathonapalooza: Challenge us. I dare you.

I’ve got a few blog posts stewing in my brainpan at the moment, but between work and prep for the 24 hour gameathon on Saturday, I haven’t had a lot of time to sit down and actually write any of it.

But the gameathon — The First Annual Gamers For Godlessness 24 Hour Gameathonapalooza Starring JT (Eberhard) and J(ason) T(hibeault) With Special Guests — is shaping up to be epic. The live stream will be posted as an embedded twitch.tv stream and chat room right here at this very blog.

With Russell Glasser’s help, and with assists by Aliasalpha, John Lenard and Craig Robertson (cheers, gents!), we managed to get three player MAME working with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4: Turtles In Time. It took a lot of fiddling, but we’ve managed to work out the kinks and we should be ready to go for Saturday. Meaning me, JT Eberhard, Russell Glasser and Debbie Goddard are definitely going to play four-player Ninja Turtles.

Russell’s already excited. I know for sure he’ll be there. Though, I have a few people who expressed interest who hasn’t actually gotten back to me with a definitive time yet. I hate leaving scheduling to the last second, so I’m about to go bother them by email now.

JT has suggested that we do gaming stunts and dares for pledges — making the amount you, the viewers, pledge dependent on such things as how many levels we can beat in Contra with only three lives, how fast we can get through Megaman 2 Flash Man’s stage (hell with that! I say Quick Man! Those laser beams are horrendous!), et cetera.

And I think we’re going to cap the gaming at about the N64. Any newer than that, and we’re not really doing the name “classic” justice.

So, what do you want to see us do in exchange for your pledges? And remember, after the first $300 to cover our overhead, half of our pledges will go to Women In Secularism, and half to Camp Quest.

… Oh what the hell. It’s early yet, but here’s the donation widget.

What I don’t get is if shredder has random time travel magic powers and sent the turtles back in time, why did he bother to send the same cannon fodder enemies back to mildly inconvenience the turtles? More importantly why did he equip them with axes and swords rather than the guns they had in the level before? Was he worried that guns would be anachronistic when wielded by ninjas that explode when beaten up?

Does one of you have Chrono Trigger? If you do, I hereby challenge someone to achieve the most difficult ending: the immediate Lavos fight.

Start a New Game+. Play through the opening fair scene as normal until you get to Lucca’s teleporter. At some point during the scene, a red portal appears on the right-hand machine, which will take you directly to Lavos. I’ve got some moneybuxxx to donate if one of you can beat him (it?) one-on-one.

If you don’t have Chrono Trigger, go get it, play through once, then proceed from the start of the previous paragraph.

Lavos is more likely a her / it given all the Lavos Spawn you have to fight. I’d love to pull that challenge, but that’s an investment of at least 40 hrs unless I cheat. I owned Chrono Trigger, and I’ve seen that super-fast ending (that plays the credits super-fast in honour of your achievement), so I know exactly how hard it is. But I don’t think I could manage in the time we have.

Aliasalpha: The SNES version at least makes it make a bit more sense, by having it as a device inside the Technodrome instead of magical powers that Shredder suddenly gains.

Hrm, nothing newer than the N64, eh?

Well, I’m not going to be mean and suggest ET, but here’s a few gems to consider…

    Blaster Master (NES)
    MegaMan 1, 2, 3 (NES)
    Legacy of the Wizard (NES)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PSX, Saturn – a personal favorite)
Final Fantasy IV (you can do it sub-4 hours! 😀 SNES)
    Dark Castle (Genesis)
And a perfect multiplayer game, Zombies Ate My Neighbors (SNES, Genesis)!

Jason, can’t you do save states in the newer versions of mame? There may be save points you can download somewhere that would begin at ng+

Even if the snes version explains time travel better, I still don’t get why he’d hobble his henchmen by giving them axes instead of assault rifles. Perhaps the time travel device went over budget, the accountants realised that the henchmen’s hit percentage with rifles was so low that ranged battle was no longer cost effective, implemented austerity measures and started lobbying for tax cuts for supervillains.

Extra super bonus nerd points if you can do it while wielding the Mop.

    Danny:

Blaster Master (NES) — Gem. Single player though.
MegaMan 1, 2, 3 (NES) — Gems, some challenges might involve it
Legacy of the Wizard (NES) — Never played it
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PSX, Saturn – a personal favorite) — HELL YES SOTN. Also solo though.
Final Fantasy IV (you can do it sub-4 hours! 😀 SNES) — I suspect we’ll be going for more action-oriented, but sure. I liked it a lot.
Dark Castle (Genesis) — YOU MADMAN. YOU TORTURER.
And a perfect multiplayer game, Zombies Ate My Neighbors (SNES, Genesis)! — JT hates it, I loved it. I might force him to play it.
