Argentina enacts most progressive transgender laws ever! Bravo!

Via the New York Times:

Argentina has put in place some of the most liberal rules on changing gender in the world, allowing people to alter their gender on official documents without first having to receive a psychiatric diagnosis or surgery.

The measure, which won unanimous support in the Senate this month, would also require public and private medical practitioners to provide free hormone therapy or gender reassignment surgery for those who want it — including those under the age of 18.

This is seriously the most progressive legal take on transgender rights in the world, and will save countless people untold emotional hardship in trying to make their physical sex comport with their gender identity.

Next steps: defend this foothold for human rights, and export this set of laws to the rest of the world. Can we do it?

    Niiice!

And, unanimous support in the Senate? Our Senate is never unanimous on anything more controversial than names for post offices.

Heh. See, as it turns out, some countries don’t have their halls of power stuffed to the brim with authoritarian religious asshats.

My Spanish is half-decent, come to think of it… Maybe I should update my contingency plans. I sometimes think “If [horrible thing X], I’m moving to Canada,” but maybe it should be “moving to Argentina.”

The unanimous vote is a bit misleading, from what I understand. It was unanimous amongst those who showed up. The heavily Catholic wing mostly just stayed home that day, knowing they weren’t going to win this one.

That’s almost as good though, Natalie — at least they’re cowardly enough that they don’t want to have been seen voting against it. Shame there’s so many Catholics in office though.
