We’ve had several cats that like to retrieve. The difference with dogs is that they do it when THEY want to, not when you want to. Our current retriever has been tending to want to play fetch at 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning.
The panting on this one is really cute and doglike, however.

I’ve never seen a cat pant like that but my cat definitely likes to play fetch with pieces of paper. Which is why I found about a dozen pieces of wadded up paper under the couch when I vacuumed today.

In several of the camera angles a fan can be seen blowing air from an (apparently) open window into the room. This implies air conditioning that is not working and, by extension, hot, muggy conditions.
That would go a long way to explaining the cat’s dog-like panting. Cat’s do pant when they get too warm, especially when they are playing real hard like this one is or if they’re a cheetah chasing gazelle on an African savannah.
Not to say that this rascal doesn’t just look that way a better part of the time . . .

Most cats will fetch when they are between six months to two years of age. They don’t think of it as fetching, they think of it as training the human to throw the ball.
I had a cat who would fetch for thirty minutes straight. She would start panting a few minutes in. After twenty minutes she would drop the ball next to my chair and throw her body down like she was dying. But as long as I taunted her by tossing the ball up and down a couple times, she’d go on for another ten minutes.

One of my attack cats, Max (after James Clerk Maxwell) loves to go boating and so will pick up anything he can and drop it in the water dish. Both of my critters will chase after stuff, but neither of them ever brings it back to me.
