New Avengers poster features a boobs-and-ass comic book pose!

Only… it’s not Black Widow, the only female Avenger that apparently made the poster cut, who has to torsion her spine out of alignment so we can see her breasts and hindquarters simultaneously. Oh no. Not this time.

Below the fold.

Avengers Assemble movie poster

Apparently Robert Downey Jr’s metal ass must face his enemies in combat after all.

Wonder where Ant/Giant Man and Wasp are. Must both be in tiny-mode.

Also, why did they change the movie title? What’s wrong with The Avengers? Other than that some other foolish movie franchises stole the name, I suppose…

Via SFX, hat tip to my darling wife who pointed it out.

To be fair he’s not as twisted as he could be but at least Black Widow wasn’t ‘eschergirl-erized’.

It’s for the UK. Probably so the older folks won’t wonder which ones are supposed to be Emma Peel and John Steed.

That said, this is hilarious. :) Since the Black Window isn’t in a spine-twisting pose, but Hulk and Iron man are, I wonder is one of the graphic designers has taken the criticism to heart? :)

Technically the british spyish show predates the comics by 2 years. So I think they get to claim the name :P

Well, at least they left the guys some room for organs ;)

From Dark Horizons – “The alteration is to avoid audience confusion with the other “The Avengers”, that classic staple of 60′s British television (and not so classic 1998 film adaptation). Such a change would not have been done lightly, and there has obviously been research indicating title confusion with the adventures of the dapper John Steed and catsuited Emma Peel.”

I hate to be a vile objectifier, but, they covered up Thor’s arms! This is tragic! They were the most memorable thing from the first Avenger’s trailer! I feel a sudden solidarity with the fans of skimpy, impractical clothing in comics.

Call me sophomoric, but I got the biggest chuckle out of “In CINEMAS April 26″.

hehe, they used different words then I do…

Sorry, been a long day and I enjoy the little things.

Also, why did they change the movie title?

Because someone in the make-up-titles department is an Aqua Teen Hunger Force fan?

This line of films has shown little hesitation to use males the way comic books traditionally use females, as sex objects. They are way more in touch with their core demographics…Any bets on whether Thor takes his shirt off?

To psocoptera’s point, in a way these movies are better than the comics, given that the depiction of men is decidedly not “power fantasy”, e.g. overblown muscled Hulk clones, so much as “sexy with a chance of powerful”.

I’ll also note that Black Widow’s depiction in this poster is actually less… endowed… than Scarlett Johansson.

Also, to geek out for a moment, Hawkeye looks fucking badass.

Well, I definitely want to give them my money for this movie now.

Marvel in general…eh. I was ready to buy the monthly subscription for Ghost Rider with the new female one until they put boobs on her. Boobs on a flaming skeleton, because Mother of Meatballs forbid that they just use the stylization of flame-hair and her actions or body language or proportions to otherwise distinguish her from Danny Ketch.

    Oh, wrong Avengers… Shame.

What the hell is wrong with Iron Man’s pose? It’s the classic “he looks up/over his shoulder and sees that he needs to defend himself and *wooosh* turns around and blasts!” pose, used to give the impression of dynamics. As in, the character is depicted mid-motion and not standing there in a boring wooden position.
Yeah, so it’s a bit cliche and showy and overly dramatic — fits the genre perfectly. It’s O.K. anatomically, he doesn’t do a stupid pout… where’s the problem?

    Early and often, one hopes.

    Tynk,
Here in the UK we watch films in the Cinema, not movies in the movie theatre. I guess this is the British poster.

Interesting… it does indeed look like the North American release is still called The Avengers. So I picked up the UK poster instead.

Ysanne: in comics, this pose is often held by women, specifically so that the artist has a reason to draw both butt cheeks and both breasts in the shot at the same time. It usually involves a significant amount of spine-breakage and organ-removal to do it, and it’s usually male gaze.

Yes, it’s overused, and it’s the “OMG something just snuck up on me” pose, but in comics, you’ll often see women heading into battle in that pose. As in, they know where the enemy is, and they’re twisting for the audience for no reason whatsoever.

See Escher Girls for reference material.

Look at her pose again. Black Widow is posed identically like a publicity still of Kate Beckinsale from “Underworld.” Do a quick search of images from the film and you will find it.

Look at Captain America in that poster, relative to Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury. Caps got to be at least 8 feet tall! Plus, Hulk is the one doing the most stereotypically female pose: arched back, chest thrown forward, ass towards the camera.

So I’m looking at this poster of what are supposed to be Avengers, and I don’t see a single Grumman in the lot. Unless that thing descending in flames in the background is supposed to be a TBF. Doesn’t look like Daddy Bush’s plane.

    I’m disappointed.

@josh… I think Cap is standing on something… car, rubble, Hank Pym..its hard to tell from this angle.

Hawkeye is in this movie? The character arcs that need to be serviced in this movie are going to make the script a enough of a mess without introducing yet another character. Plus we have a villian(who?) to deal with.

Maybe good storytelling doesn’t matter in a movie like this but I hope there is at least some effort.

The poster looks like a bad photoshop project to me. Images of people from stock sources force inserted onto a background.
