Cain captured by Pokéball, endorses Mewtoo

Herman Cain quoted from a source he identified as “the Pokemon movie” in a speech suspending his presidential campaign Saturday.

“I believe these words came from the Pokemon movie,” Cain said. “Life can be a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It’s never easy when there’s so much on the line. But you and I can make a difference. There’s a mission just for you and me.”

He continued: “Just look inside and you will find just what you can do.”

In previous speeches, Cain has attributed the quotation to “a poet.”

You cannot make this shit up.

Between that and his SimCity-ripoff tax plan, I might have voted for him even in spite of the facts that a) I’m Canadian, and b) he would pretty much have destroyed your country’s economy. Video game references rule.

AFA: gay marriage leads to polyamory, car, building, dog marriage

Apparently, according to the yahoos at the American Family Association, if gays are allowed to marry, that literally opens the door for polyamory right then and there. Those of you in polyamorous relationships need only fight for gay marriage, I guess! It’s awesome that the bar for polyamory was that low, that we could fix two sets of injustices by fixing one of them! Should be seriously heartening news to everyone presently unable to celebrate their love officially, and obtain legal protections for their loved ones.

Fukushima: it gets even worse

As though it wasn’t bad enough already. The NY Times reports that the meltdown may have already escaped containment and begun boring through the concrete floor, according to a computer simulation of the original accident.

Soon after an earthquake and a tsunami on March 11 knocked out cooling systems at the power plant, nuclear fuel rods in three of its six reactors overheated and slumped, the operator, the Tokyo Electric Power Company, has said.

Flash is dying, long live HTML5

Adobe has ended development on Flash for mobile phones, meaning the venerable technology of the internet’s yesteryear may finally be on the wane.

Flash, the software made by Adobe, has been a fillip for the Internet for years. In the early days of web browsers, which couldn’t play video or do fancy graphics, Flash appeared as an almost miracle cure. It worked in all browsers, and let designers build graphically rich, sophisticated websites.

It was used by YouTube to play the one billion or so videos viewed on the site a day (the number is now three billion) and there were even web competitions for the funky sites designed in Flash.

Life may not depend on planet having a large moon

Via Universe Today, some news regarding the long-held belief that a stable axial tilt requires a large enough moon to provide stabilization — a study suggests it’s less necessary than previously believed.

Ever since a study conducted back in 1993, it has been proposed that in order for a planet to support more complex life, it would be most advantageous for that planet to have a large moon orbiting it, much like the Earth’s moon. Our moon helps to stabilize the Earth’s rotational axis against perturbations caused by the gravitational influence of Jupiter. Without that stabilizing force, there would be huge climate fluctuations caused by the tilt of Earth’s axis swinging between about 0 and 85 degrees.

But now that belief is being called into question thanks to newer research, which may mean that the number of planets capable of supporting complex life could be even higher than previously thought.

Anything that widens the scope of potential planets where life might have arisen is welcome news. We’re finding new exoplanets every damn day nowadays, so the search for extraterrestrial life-harboring planets is simply a matter of time, I’m willing to wager.

Chopra: “I’m more aligned with Dawkins than O’Reilly’s thinking”

You’ve gotta be shittin’ me. Deepak Chopra very publicly tore into Richard Dawkins on The O’Reilly Factor, then when he realized what an ass he came off as, apologized to Dawkins publicly… via Youtube.
