It’s geek to me too

Stephanie Zvan posted her Science Online 2011 panel over at her blog, and I thought I’d take this opportunity to remind you of it, since I was at the panel as the live-tweeter. You can see me on the video in the front row sporting my screaming green Scicurious t-shirt and seriously lacking in the hair department.

It’s All Geek to Me from Smartley-Dunn on Vimeo.

The audio quality is a bit iffy, but the subject matter is spot-on. How do you folks communicate in geeky ways?

I hear ya, Jase. As much as I love Nova Science Now, Carl Sagan’s Cosmos is the best science television show in history, which forced me to burn the Nova t-shirt my nephew got me for my birthday.

FFVI might have a superior story, but I still love FFVII. Even if I didn’t enjoy the game, I’d still have to wear that shirt because my father-in-law is an elder in the Jehovah’s Witness church. I also plan on wearing it when I have a chat with some Mormons this Sunday, thanks to the tagline “Church Of The One-Winged Angel of Latter-Day Summons” written on the back of the garment.

Okay, I wouldn’t go reductio ad absurdum like that! It’d end up in my closet only to be taken out when I have an appreciative audience. My problem (and it’s MY problem) is, I like to wear t-shirts that reflect things that I find to be awesome. The whole one-winged angel thing actually kind of bothered me. Not just the cutting-off of Jenova’s wing, or the Oedipus complex Sephiroth had going for him, but the theme of raping the planet to serve her purposes (or Shinra’s purposes) like a planetary parasite seemed derivative of Chrono Trigger. I know, I know. Every RPG plot is derivative. I found it a bit too on-the-nose.
