Sup dawg, i herd u liek memes.

I don’t know if you remember that Weezer music video that went massively viral a while back (understandably so — they made extensive use of the stars of other viral videos). Well, a friend showed me today a “remix” version — one with fully twice the internet memes, without somehow coming off like they just took the original, threw a bunch of extra stuff into it, then put it in a blender to see if it would blend.

It’s pretty awesome in its own right. The sheer meme density rivals XKCD.

I really ought to do a piece on internet memes sometime soon. Like, a true scientific paper on them, their provenance, their history, how they spread, how fickle their medium is for what is meme-worthy and what isn’t, etc. Though that sounds like a shitload of work.

Here’s tons of evidence and investigations! Reply: “but, we want evidence!”

Silly Kitty. Birthers, like all conspiracy theorists, don’t care about facts or evidence. Nice try. If the evidence doesn’t say what you want it to, just pretend it doesn’t exist or totally make shit up.

Birthers are asshats. The Daily Beast reporter called it — you guys are NUTS.

What is love? Baby don’t hurt me…

“I hope you’re just going to ignore that loser.”

“Nope, I plan on posting about it on my blog.”

Jodi let out a resigned, slightly disgusted sigh. I’m sorry dear, but I just can’t let stuff like this go.

Zdenny, Christian un-thinker and god-bot par excellence, decided that rather than continuing the argument he started here, he would instead post a reiteration of his initial arguments, with a few sentences from my rebuttal interspersed, over at his own blog. (I assume the male gender here because I’m not 100% sure, though the proselytizers have a strong tendency toward being the males in a Christian relationship. I could be wrong.) You really don’t even have to click the link, honestly, as its entire contents will be posted below with my reply. I provide it only to prove he actually said it, and this is unaltered from its original form.

The day journalism died

Walter Cronkite has passed away yesterday at 92 from his long-standing cerebrovascular disease, a complication of dementia. Though I did not grow up through the Watergate scandal, the three political assassinations that he covered, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Viet Nam war, or the Apollo 11 moon landing, when looking at the old archival news footage of these events, it was Cronkite who eased and guided the US and the world through them. The passing of the standard-bearer for journalism leaves this world poorer. It is a true shame that there is nobody in the news media today that can hold a candle to his legacy.

The very face of news journalism.
The very face of news journalism.

Rest in peace, Mr. Cronkite. Be assured that when pretenders assume your mantle and are unworthy, we will test them and if they are found wanting, we will oust them.

Some touching tribute comments can be found here at the New York Times.

The day journalism died

“I am prepared to die”, he said, in 1964

The man primarily associated with ending Apartheid, Nelson Mandela, turns 91 today. The long-term human rights activist, in possession of balls of steel that did not rust or tarnish with twenty-seven years in political imprisonment, took a five-year term in office at 75 as the oldest South African president. After retiring, he has spent the twilight years of his vibrant life working for the greater good of mankind through a number of charitable organizations and political movements.

Read about him at Wikipedia, and be sure to check out his prepared statement from the dock from April 20th, 1964, railing against the political hegemony that put him in jail, acting as judge, jury and executioner.

Above all, we want equal political rights, because without them our disabilities will be permanent. I know this sounds revolutionary to the whites in this country, because the majority of voters will be Africans. This makes the white man fear democracy.

But this fear cannot be allowed to stand in the way of the only solution which will guarantee racial harmony and freedom for all. It is not true that the enfranchisement of all will result in racial domination. Political division, based on colour, is entirely artificial and, when it disappears, so will the domination of one colour group by another.

There’s a good reason this man is a hero to many thinking folks who value democracy and humanist ideals. May his example shine on for many more years.

C-Street Blues

Just can’t get enough of Rachel Maddow.

Here’s more hilarity about the shadowy Christian organization called “The Family”, which makes up a significant portion of the American government. A third C-Street resident and member of the self-described “Christian mafia” is now involved in a major scandal.

I wonder what it’ll take to eliminate their status as a church and force them to pay property taxes. Hypocrisy alone isn’t enough, unfortunately.
