“A little jewel that gives voice to the millions”: Amazon Customer Review of “Why Are You Atheists So Angry?”

I’ve gotten some nice Amazon customer reviews for Why Are You Atheists So Angry? 99 Things That Piss Off the Godless, and I thought I’d repost some of them. Here’s a good one, five stars out of five. (As of this writing, the book has 148 customer reviews, and 120 are either 5-star or 4-star.) Here’s what Jorge Trullols Fumanal had to say:

Atheism out of the closet

This book is a little jewel that gives voice to the millions of non-believing persons who suffer anonymously the privileges that religion enjoys in our society. Even if my background is very different to the author’s, I endorse 100% her opinions. Most atheists would be content to treat religion as superstitions like astrology or homeopathy. Unfortunately, it is not as benign and it requires a very different approach. One that ensures that the point of view of non-believers is, at least, considered as valid an explanation of reality.

Great work!

Thanks, Jorge! And if any of you have read Why Are You Atheists So Angry?, it’d be awesome if you’d post a review.

“A worthy addition to any atheist bookshelf”: Amazon Customer Review of “Why Are You Atheists So Angry?”

(As of this writing, the book has 148 customer reviews, and 120 are either 5-star or 4-star.) Here’s what Rhsanborn had to say:

A worthy addition to any atheist bookshelf

Don’t expect a philosophical thesis that silences religion once and for all. Don’t expect a league of new arguments to use against believers.

Rather, expect a very condensed, easy to read introduction to some of the things atheists think, and some of the reasons they are so passionate about them. The book is written in a very conversational style, and at 156 pages, isn’t too long to chew through in a few days. More importantly, it’s not too long that you can’t ask friends and family to read it when they start to ask questions about your atheism. This is an excellent book to get someone’s feet wet. If they’re interested further they can jump off into more thorough texts referenced at the end of the book. Or maybe, they can just walk away with a little clearer idea of what an atheist believes. Either way, this book fills a gap much needed by the atheism visibility movement, and it does so wonderfully.

Thanks, Rhsanborn! And if any of you have read Why Are You Atheists So Angry?, it’d be awesome if you’d post a review.

Greta Speaking in Atlanta This Weekend, at Atheist Alliance of America Conference!

I have a speaking gig coming this weekend, in Atlanta at the Atheist Alliance of America conference. If you’re in the area, I hope to see you there!

CITY: Atlanta, GA (Atheist Alliance of America conference)
DATES: October 15-18
EVENT: Atheist Alliance of America conference
TOPIC: Atheism and Sexuality
SUMMARY: The sexual morality of traditional religion tends to be based, not on solid ethical principles, but on a set of taboos about what kinds of sex God does and doesn’t want people to have. And while the sex-positive community offers a more thoughtful view of sexual morality, it still often frames sexuality as positive by seeing it as a spiritual experience. What are some atheist alternatives to these views? How can atheists view sexual ethics without a belief in God? And how can atheists view sexual transcendence without a belief in the supernatural?
LOCATION: Crowne Plaza Hotel, 1325 Virginia Avenue, Atlanta, GA
HOST: Atheist Alliance of America
OTHER SPEAKERS: Bria Crutchfield, Jeffrey Tayler, Miri Mogilevsky, Monette Richards, Matt Facciani, David Diskin, Richard Haynes, Phil Ferguson, Sarah Morehead, Lucien Greaves, Stephanie Guttormson, Dale McGowan, Mandisa Thomas, Shawn Jeffers, Inna Shevchenko, more
COST: $179 – $500: single-day tickets available for $100; single-event tickets available for $20 – $50; discounted rate for students available Oct. 1
EVENT URL: atheistallianceamerica.org/conference/2015-overview

“Should be in the hands of every hospital and military chaplain”: Darrel Ray on “Comforting Thoughts About Death That Have Nothing to Do with God” (Now In Paper/Print!)

Greta Christina continues to provide unique advice and information to the growing community of seculars. We all need to consider our mortality and learn positive and productive ways to deal with our inevitable deadline. Thanks for this little book of wisdom. Christina has written a handbook we can all use. But it should be in the hands of every hospital and military chaplain, every hospice care giver, even ministers, etc. No secular person should be subjected to supernatural ideas and wishful thinking when they are dealing with death, dying and grief.

If you don’t believe in God or an afterlife — how do you cope with death?

Accepting death is never easy. But we don’t need religion to find peace, comfort, and solace in the face of death. In this mini-book collection of essays, prominent atheist author Greta Christina offers secular ways to handle your own mortality and the death of those you love.

Blending intensely personal experience with compassionate, down-to-earth wisdom, Christina (“Coming Out Atheist” and “Why Are You Atheists So Angry?”) explores a variety of natural philosophies of death. She shows how reality can be more comforting than illusion, shatters the myth that there are no atheists in foxholes — and tells how humanism got her through one of the grimmest times of her life.

“In this book Greta Christina tackles the subject of death with the insight of a philosopher and the relaxed candor of a friend — that really cool, intelligent friend who understands and cares.”

“Clear-eyed conversation about death and grief”: Valerie Tarico on “Comforting Thoughts About Death That Have Nothing to Do with God” (Now In Paper/Print!)

From the time our daughters were little, one of my husband’s goals and mine has been to help them deal with grief without resorting to false hope or superstition. When small pets died, we created a simple family ritual about the natural cycle of birth and death — and we celebrated the life, however brief. When a friend’s suicide left them in anguish, we talked through the pain that can make living unbearable. When a companion animal’s suffering became obvious, we released that life together. We talk together often about the relationships, wonders, and sense of purpose that make life meaningful to us. When Greta Christina’s small, thoughtful book of musings about death becomes available, each of our girls will receive a copy.

Cheeky, smart, unflinchingly honest, and deeply personal (as always) — Greta Christina is a perfect guide for nontheists who are looking for clear-eyed conversation about death and grief. The comforts she offers are powerful because they require no denial or self-delusion and instead are rooted in gratitude and wonder at the gift of life — and the precious opportunities made all the more acute by their transience.
