#mencallmethings: “idiots,” “stupid,”

Jerk on my blog, in response to my recent post on The Amazing Atheist:

It’s funny how people get upset over mere words. Does Amazing Atheist joke about rape? Yes. Will he ever rape anyone? No. That’s all. People who don’t get jokes are idiots. People who understand that those are jokes, but think that those jokes are unacceptable, are also idiots, and I am personally sick of social justice warriors like those.
And Amazing Atheist like to makes those jokes because modern feminism in first world countries is mostly bullshit. It’s mostly about sense of entitlement of stupid women. Actual feminism is about fighting for rights of women in countries where women actually don’t have equal rights, like Pakistan. Bitching about jokes is not.

#mencallmethings

I see. So in an effort to persuade people that The Amazing Atheist isn’t really sexist or misogynist and we should give him a chance to explain himself, this person goes onto a woman’s blog and tells her that feminists are stupid idiots.

Also, this guy is an expert on who is and is not a real feminist — and feminism only and entirely means fighting for women’s rights in countries like Pakistan. (Ask some ex-Muslim women — Heina Dadabhoy, Hiba Krisht, Taslima Nasrin — what they think of this idea. Go ahead. Ask.)

I’m reminded once again of Lewis’s Law: “Comments on any article about feminism justify feminism.”

Note: The #mencallmethings hashtag does not say #allmencallmethings, or #mostmencallmethings. If you want to learn more about the history of this hashtag and why people started using it, please read But How Do You Know It’s Sexist? The #MenCallMeThings Round-Up and Why Are You In Such A Bad Mood? #MenCallMeThings Responds! on Tiger Beatdown, where the hashtag originated. And please do not start a “but not all men are like that, so the #mencallmethings hashtag is reverse sexism!” argument. That has been addressed, at length, in the comments in the #mencallmethings: “FUCKIN HOE,” “FUCKIN FEMINAZI SLUT” post, as well as elsewhere. Please read Why “Yes, But” Is the Wrong Response to Misogyny if you’re wondering why I will not take kindly that that particular line of conversation.

*Headdesk* No matter how clearly you make your point, there will be some self-righteous dumbass who thinks that somehow his mansplaining will handwave it away. I feel tired just thinking about how you deal with it. But thanks for your efforts, and your blisteringly concise arguments.

I see Alexander Serbayev is using the “it’s just a joke” justification in trying to excuse TAA’s rape threats. If it’s a joke, how come nobody’s laughing?

“Words can never hurt you” + “It’s just a joke” + “Dear Muslima” = massive fail

Richard Dawkins must be proud to have this winner using one of his arguments.

Why is it only privileged assholes that say, “words will never hurt me”? I don’t wish it upon them, but c’mon. They can’t possibly be ignorant of the proscriptions on speech for exactly this reason. Can they?

Alexander can’t hear me over the sound of his own misplaced fear. But this is for him anyway.

It’s funny how people get upset over mere words. Does Great Christina write critically about what people say on the Internet? Yes. Will she ever forcibly remove anyone from saying anything on the Internet? No. That’s all.

People who don’t get criticism are idiots. People who understand that it is criticism, but think that the criticism is unacceptable, are arrogant, and I am personally sick of defenders of hierarchy like those.

Greta Christina feels it is necessary to makes those criticisms because modern feminism in the Global North is still needed. It is now less about changing laws (although that component still exists) and more about changing people’s attitudes and breaking down the unspoken web of unearned, selectively provided entitlements. The basic goals of liberal feminism are still being fought for by women in countries where they don’t have equal legal, de jure rights, such as in Pakistan. But complaining about people who also work against sexist bigotry and de facto discrimination in the U.S. isn’t helping either of them.

I watched his video and it was truly jaw-dropping. He tries to justify each comment in multiple, contradictory ways

    1) it was a joke
2)But, they deserved it./I’m the real victim here/pontifications on feminism.
    3)Notpology
    4) freedom of speech
4)words don’t hurt people (repeat from beginning)

Which leaves his Fantastic Fans to pick their favorite flavor. The joke excuse seems to be a favorite.

sez alexander serbayev: “It’s funny how people get upset over mere words.”
Indeed. It certainly is funny, for certain values of ‘funny’, how some people got exceptionally bent out of shape over such ‘mere words’ ad Guys, don’t do that
