It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Fish-men

I’m doing a full court press in December to finish my new book, “Coming Out Atheist: How to Do It, How to Help Each Other, and Why.” Deadline for going to the typesetter is January 2. So for most of December, I’ll be posting retreads traditional holiday posts, as well as a few cat pictures. Enjoy!

It’s beginning to look a lot like fish-men
Everywhere I go;
From the minute I got to town
And started to look around
I thought these ill-bred people’s gill-slits showed…

I still think that Christmas Rhapsody is the best Christmas song parody ever. But this is a damn close second. My only problem is that I find myself humming or whistling it jauntily, and people think I’m whistling the Christmas song, and they have no idea that what I’m humming to myself is, “As I try to escape in fright/ To the moonlit Innsmouth night/ I can hear some more.”

    I’ve always hated (with a fiery hate) that Night Before Xmas thing.

    You might like:
    ’Twas the month before Christmas: through the whole universe,
    Stupid buggers were reciting this horrible verse.
    It’s rhymes were pathetic; its scansion was worse.
    And I couldn’t help thinking it should go in reverse
    As Dan Chaucer would say, up the re-citers erse!

    I’m in considerable trouble with the in-laws as our not-quite three year old only knows the Scary Solstice lyrics to many of the carols. Being a toddler he has no problem with interrupting Grandma’s singing to pedantically explain “That’s not how it works; it’s beginning to look like fish men!”

    Personally I prefer their Carol of the Old Ones.

    Oh lord, somewhere around here I’ve got an (admittedly old) copy of Kay Shapero’s canonical list of Cthulhu filk songs from off of a FIDOnet board. Granted, Kay Shapero also wrote a couple of them, so she has a somewhat professional interest. (As professional as filkers get.) I’m going to have to find that list again now.

    <tune=”Cecilia”>Oh Cthulhu, you’re breaking my mind; My sanity’s vanishing daily!</tune>

    Which reminds me that I ran into a webcomic a while back called ‘Call of Cthulhu, the musical!’ which I need to get back to at some point…
