Organized by David Fitzgerald, Chris Hall (sadly in absentia at Skepticon), and me, the Godless Perverts Story Hour at Skepticon featured David Fitzgerald’s naughty naughty porn about an atheist’s seduction of two Mormon missionaries; Heina Dadabhoy’s sexy, thoughtful, funny piece about trying to reconcile her horniness with her now-vanished Muslim faith — and about Western men simultaneously fetishizing her and trying to rescue her; my own bad self reading my porn about a religiously guilty gay man hooking up anonymously in rest stops; Rebecca Watson’s uproarious memoir about her hookup with an ex-Mormom with some unusual ideas about sex; and the always-hilarious Keith Lowell Jensen’s weirdly sweet, weirdly unsettling stand-up comedy piece about (among other things) being a horny teenager at Christian camp. You refer to “Rebecca Watson’s uproarious memoir about her hookup with an ex-Mormom ..” I didn’t get the humor. There were a number of little warning signs that taken together in the context of a quick hook up would make many men reluctant to follow through with penetrative sex. I prefer not to detail those signs as I do not want to imply that Rebecca did anything wrong but you could just ask some experienced males to imagine what ‘Reginald’ might have been thinking about during those long silences. Sex is never 100% safe, sex with a relative stranger can be risky in a number of ways.

I’m not sure what those question marks ask so I will offer my general reaction to Rebecca’s story.
Both her’s and David Fitzgerald’s story used mormons as foils, not the religion but the persons themselves who are certainly in the beginning of their religious lives purely victims; and even later when they come knocking on your door they believe they are being helpful to you.
Rebecca’s last words were “Get the fuck out of my apartment” The reason for the anger was not obvious to me and I do not want to try to read her mind. But I can imagine myself in Reginald’s place. The first yellow caution light that flickered was when she ordered one of everything at the bar. As we are only too aware on these blogs you do not want to have first time sex with someone who has had a lot to drink. I would have wondered if she was sober enough to give consent and/or if she would have regrets tomorrow, and if there were regrets, what form might they take?
When he asked if she were on the pill, she said no because she had just moved here and went on about all she would have to do to get them. She also said that she quit taking them because “they made me crazy”. Which was it? A simple ‘bad side effects’ reply would be sufficient and not make one wonder about the contradictory responses.
Condoms break, condom slip off, condoms are not foolproof against many infections passing between sexually active people. She promised him that if anything happened she would be off to Planned Parenthood first thing in the morning. She could be confident of her intention, but could he? He knows very little about her. The urge to concieve can be strong and may be entirely below awareness manifested only in fantasy yet enable carelessness.
Rebecca introduced it as a true story and I take her word. It may be unpleasant and not entirely pertinent to consider her story with gender roles reversed….. recalling her last words, “Get the fuck out of my apartment”.
