Victim of Murder-for-Hire Plot a "bitch," "cunt," "slut," who "probably deserved it"

You can’t make this stuff up. And you wouldn’t want to.

Via Public Shaming, which I found via FreakOutNation: Tim Lambesis, the lead singer and co-founder of the Christian heavy metal band As I Lay Dying, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly trying to hire a hit man to murder his estranged wife. Many of his fans have been defending him… not by saying, “This is impossible, he’s a good person, he would never do something like this, it must be some sort of horrible mistake”… but by saying that the victim of the intended murder was a “bitch,” a “cunt,” a “slut,” “crazy,” “annoying,” a “crazy hoe,” who “probably deserved it.”

Oh — and by saying, “God help all feminists from my wrath if I never hear another new As I Lay Dying album because of some slut.” Because opposition to murder for hire is totally an extremist feminazi plot.

Tim Lambesis tweet 01

“Still in shock about the Tim Lambesis arrest. His wife must have been one hell of a bitch for him want try and do that!”

Tim Lambesis tweet 02

“My friend Andrew just told me about the As I Lay Dying thing that happend. Damn. Wife must be a bitch.”

Tim Lambesis tweet 03

“I still love As I Lay Dying. Whatever. His wife was probably a cunt anyway.”

Greta here: There’s something about the “Whatever” in this one that gets to me. Yeah, so a musician I love and respect may have tried to hire someone to kill his wife. Whatever. It’s not like that’s a big deal or anything. You women are always stirring up drama.

Tim Lambesis tweet 04

“The singer for As I Lay Dying gets arrested for trying to hire a hitman to kill his wife. Bitch must be crazy/ annoying AF”

Greta here: Because being annoying definitely deserves the death penalty. The wages of annoyance is death.

Tim Lambesis tweet 05

“As I lay dying story is interesting. Maybe his wife was a cunt? Praying never trumps taking action. #mellow”

Greta here: Because the “action” one wants to take in the world is hiring a hit man to kill your estranged wife. Well, as long as you’re #mellow about it.

Tim Lambesis tweet 06

“Pretty bummed by the Tim Lambesis thing. Hopin it all works out for him and the band. I guess sometimes you just gotta kill a bitch, right?”

Greta here: Right. Sometimes you just gotta kill a bitch. That’s exactly what Jesus would do. Well, as long as your priorities are straight. Hope it works out for the would-be murdering singer and his band. Hope I can keep listening to my Christian metal music. That’s the important thing.

Tim Lambesis tweet 07

“In retrospect, I bet that bitch was crazy. Free Tim Lambesis.”

Greta here: “In retrospect.” Translation: “Nothing she ever did led me to believe she was crazy, but now that her estranged husband seems to have hired a hit man to murder her, it becomes clear — she probably was crazy. And the person who tried to kill her should therefore go free.”

Tim Lambesis tweet 08

“She probably deserved it! Tim Lambesis is still someone I look up to! #FREELAMBEZ”

Greta here: Translation: “I am not willing to consider the possibility that someone I looked up to could have done something so terrible. Therefore, I am going to warp my entire moral code and insist that the target of an attempted murder deserved it. Because it’s more important to me to admire a rock musician than it is to have a bare baseline of human decency.”

Tim Lambesis tweet 09

“Tim Lambesus can want a bitch dead. I know I want a few dead. Haha.”

Greta here: Haha! There are women in the world I hate so much I want their lives extinguished. Isn’t that funny?

Tim Lambesis tweet 10

“FREE Tim Lambesis. everyone wants someone dead at some point he just had the money and balls to.do it even if he didnt succeed. Props dude”

Greta here: You know how atheists are always asking believers, “If it were proven to you with 100% certainty that there is no God, would you run around killing people?” Apparently for some of them, the answer is “Yes.” Apparently for some of them, the only thing preventing them from committing murder isn’t even fear of God — it’s lack of money or courage. And those who do muster the courage to attempt murder? Props.

Tim Lambesis tweet 11

“Tim from As I Lay Dying arrested for setting a hit on his wife? Bitch probably deserved it.”

Tim Lambesis tweet 12

“As I Lay Dying front man arrested for hiring a hit man for his wife. She probably deserves it.”

Tim Lambesis tweet 13

“Time Lambesis from As I Lay Dying got arrested for trying to hire someone to kill his wife… Im sure she deserved it haha”

Greta here: What’s with the “haha”? I think if someone I admired were arrested for alleged attempted murder, my reaction would not be hilarity. Even if I thought they were wrongly accused, I don’t think I’d be laughing. You keep using this phrase, “haha.” I do not think it means what you think it means.

Tim Lambesis tweet 14

“So the singer of As I Lay Dying got arrested for trying to hire someone to kill his ex wife. I bet she’s a bitch.”

Tim Lambesis tweet 15

“So about Tim Lambesies… its definitely his wife’s fault, no way Tim just does that she musta been one crazy hoe”

Greta here: Translation: “There’s no way this person I admire could have done something bad. Therefore, by definition, the target must have done something so terrible, so unspeakable, that she deserved it. And being a crazy hoe definitely meets that standard.”

Tim Lambesis tweet 16

“I don’t care if @TimLambesis “allegedly” tried to hire a motherfucker to kill his bitch wife. @ASILAYDYING is still my shit. #Forever”

Greta here: “I don’t care.” Really. Not, “this can’t be true”; in this case, not even, “she probably deserved it.” “I don’t care.” About attempted murder. Cold-blooded, plotting- it- in- advance, hiring- someone- to- do- it murder. I don’t care.

Tim Lambesis tweet 17

“The As I Lay Dying lead singer was arrested for conspiracy to murder his wife @SheProbablyDeservedIt”

Greta here: There’s something about turning “she probably deserved it” into a hashtag. Really hope it doesn’t trend.

Tim Lambesis tweet 18

“@timlambesis She probably deserved it”

Tim Lambesis tweet 19

Tweet 1 of a three-tweet conversation: “Tim Lambesies may have hired someone to murder his wife, but to be fair, she did subtweet gossiping rumors about him for a few months.”

Tweet 2 of a three-tweet conversation: “@DevinePowers I have decided that no matter what happened it’s definitely that bitches fault”

Tweet 3 of a three-tweet conversation: “@HeckDynasty @DevinePowers God help all feminists from my wrath if I never hear a new As I Lay Daying album because of some slut”

Greta here: “To be fair, she did subtweet gossiping rumors about him.” And murder is a totally fair response to spreading gossip.

“I have decided that no matter what happened it’s definitely that bitches fault.” No matter what happened. Literally nothing will persuade me that I am wrong about bitches deserving to be murdered.

“God help all feminists from my wrath if I never hear a new As I Lay Daying album because of some slut” No comment.

And now, if you’ll all excuse me, I have to go take a shower. And cry. And throw up.

Christians as a bunch of murderous misogynists, no surprise there at all. Really sort of sums up the whole religion doesn’t it?

  2. 5

Fuck, this reminds of the morons tweeting how Chris Brown was justified in beating Rhianna because she was a bitch/slut/gave him an STD/cheated on him/made him look foolish in front of his friends.

Seriously? Why are we giving abusers a fucking pass for some playground “she talked bad things about me” BS?

Now I need to go cry and throw up too.

This is good example of just how dangerous tribalism is. Most of these comments appear to come from fans of the band who apparently are willing, not just to overlook the behaviour of their hero, but to actually blame someone else for his crime, even his intended victim.

I’d like to think that if they weren’t his fans they might be able to think more clearly about the situation. But more than that, I really wish we humans weren’t so inclined to be tribal (or that we greatly expanded our definition of “tribe”).

How many people here maintain lists in Twitter? Just added a whole heap to my ‘wankers’ list. It’s not much, but it’s something that hangs around and should people check out what lists a person has been put in later and there’s a huge number of lists like that…

  5. 16

Greta @#3 all too true. The misogynist/rape culture is all too pervasive and neither religious morality or skeptical thinking seem to be protection against that sort of thinking.

  6. 17

Citizengold, I have a homophobes list, but I’m not sure what I’d call this one. I don’t think “Christians Who Celebrate Murder” fits in the twitter form.

  7. 18

Sometimes I think I see a spark of hope for humanity, but then I read stuff like this and think it was more like the sputterings of a flooded morality engine before the sympathy battery dies and a blizzard of cold hatred buries the last vestiges of compassion in a glacier smug self satisfaction.

With the gay rights movement seeming to succeed where black Americans and women seemed to succeeded earlier, now I think none of them succeeded, but we just covered the shit in pretty tissue paper and had everyone hold their breath. And damn you, Greta, you just had to ask, “Does anybody smell that?”

I like to be very explicit about my lists so nobody think I put someone on it for taking my parking space or whatever.

I particularly like the fact that people are OUTRAGED to be put on a “homophobes” list. I’ve had two threaten to sue me, and one other spent over 11 straight hours contacting hundreds on my list telling them how to remove themselves. A few did.

And then I added them back.
Point is that others looking to see what lists they are on will know more than that they just ran across someone who didn’t like them – they find out exactly what it is that person is being called on. Which of course is why they freak out and threaten to sue.

There’s something about turning “she probably deserved it” into a hashtag. Really hope it doesn’t trend.

I have no idea how hashtags work, but you could probably post this to (with? on? in? under? over? for?) the ChristianLove hashtag.

Natasha @16 & Greta @3, it is true that arsehattery and vile misogyny may not know a religion; in the recent past (and at present, as Ophelia finds out daily) we have seen self-proclaimed atheists be as much guilty of them as any of these presumably-Christian tweeters. But perhaps it is worth noting that of the two, only Christians claim to have a monopoly on Christian Love & Compassion™ while proudly displaying in public their misogyny, homophobia, bigotry, xenophobia, racism and other endearing qualities.

Having seen these tweets, I feel an urgent need to bleach my eyes and brain.

  11. 26

Luckily in the music forums that I interact with the general consensus is that if the facts are as presented then the guy is an idiot, and an unpleasant one at that. The fact that he’s a god-botherer too, well…

However I’m not surprised about those tweets. Having been a metalhead for 25+ years the whole scene is somewhat tribal with a certain “us vs them” mentality. And it also has it’s fair share of idiots. Add that the whole hero worship thing that young fans of anything tend to have.

    Yeah, not a surprise unfortunately.

  12. 27

Apparently the guy asked two people at his gym if they knew anyone who could murder his wife. So I guess his fans are as dumb as he is.

I should just be grateful that no one in a band I like has tried to have anyone killed yet.

  13. 30

I’d like to add my two cents. While i’m certainly not saying that some of the people writing these things are NOT christian, as someone who lives in a town where As I Lay Dying had frequented our Christian music festival several times, I can testify to the fact that several of these people are your typical wanna-be Gothic, “we cut our wrists for fun, boo hoo, look at my mascara running down my face” types who think they hate the world and everyone is better of dead anyway. And as a person who is ashamed to admit I used to associate with people like this, i’m sad to say…I’m not that surprised. Disgusted? Appalled? In complete DISAGREEMENT? Yes, yes, and yes. But surprised? Not in the least.

  14. 31

I agree those tweets are pretty obnoxious and over the top. If you check the Ultimate Guitar forum concerning this matter you won’t many comments of the same nature. I know this because I have been commenting about this murder for hire plot there for the last few days and most of the other users are pretty quick to smack down those are being rude or coarse just of the sake of it. That said there are always going to be negative assholes regardless of religion or belief system. Message boards and things like Twitter are the spot for them to rear their ugly heads because its likely no one they know is going to read the trash they spew..

  15. 32

In order to preserve the tiniest sliver of hope for my fellow humans, I choose to believe that all thosse quoted above we’re being sarcastic or parodistic. Yep, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

    …what’s your point?

Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia on their “Christianity”, I am an atheist, just wanted to share this with the morons who think that the lead singer is a christian…this guy is confused, and working his way out of the christian closet (IMO), maybe his “wife” had a hard time with this kind of thinking, and was fighting with him over it. You know how some christians get when you try to debate the existence of their “god”. Anyway, read this:

Lambesis stated on his Tumblr page, “Every year that I had put toward my degree in Religious Studies caused me to see the god of tradition and ritual that I grew up with as less and less of a probable truth. By the time I graduated, my entire concept of the divine had changed as I sought to reconcile spirituality and reason. The more I sought truth uncorrupted by years of religious history, the more I kept finding answers I didn’t want to find. Emotionally, it would have been easiest for me to just hold on to what I grew up believing, but mentally that wasn’t an option anymore.”

  18. 35

So i originally read about the story here

    http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/tim_lambesis_pleads_not_guilty_bail_officially_set_at_3_million.html

its quire interesting to hear that he ahd allegedly lost his faith, so it may be interesting to think about the circumstances of being in such a heavily christian environment and how that may have contributed to the situation (feeling trapped etc), and how atheist groups may be able to help talk down people insituations like this.

There was also a semi interesting discussion in the comments (or posibly the actual anouncement of the arrest) that appeared to be more mature than the predicable, if saddening twitter storm going on. specifically it was a discussion around enjoying problematic media, like music by this band, while aknowledging that one or more of the creators may have committed horrible acts.

  19. 37

It makes no sense to say, “The only thing the atheist movement has in common in the fact that they don’t believe in God.” Yes — and the only thing that the environmental movement has in common is concern for the environment.

I’d say it’s not the same to share an interest in X than to share a lack of interest in X. The argument is indeed bollocks, but I think that it’s because it’s false (we do have other things in common), not because it’s invalid.

Once that point’s been clarified, let me tell you I agree with what you’re saying.

  20. 38

    Rhonda,

“maybe his “wife” had a hard time with this kind of thinking, and was fighting with him over it. You know how some christians get when you try to debate the existence of their “god”.”

Yeah, right, those nasty christian wifes, he basically had no choice but to hire a hitman, I see that now!

Astounding. Horrifying. I’m trying to imagine any like situation where I would take up for the attempted murderer and excoriate the intended victim. I can’t imagine it. It’s like blaming rape victims by tearing at them for their clothing or alcohol consumption. Whether or not the intended victim here was a saint or the worst kind of shrew is completely beside the point. We don’t murder people. We don’t hire people to murder people. If you don’t like your wife anymore, you divorce her.

    This is breathtakingly sad.

[…] Reaction from metal musicians has been generally cautious and staid: consensus is “we’re shocked at these allegations, but we’ll let the justice system take its course.” Reaction from fans of the band has been mostly the same, but social media being what it is, some festering froth still manages to rise to the top. Here is a good round-up. […]

I love As I Lay Dying and I’m A christian but that doesn’t mean I support what he tried to do. Maybe there is a part of everyone that thinks “well maybe she deserved it, maybe she was a bitch, slut, whore, ho, hooker, tramp, prostitute, trick, cunt” or any other variation of any of those words. So answer me this, would you be saying stuff like “she probably deserved it” if Tim was married to your sister or mom, aunt, cousin, close female friend. Or lets take Tim out of this for a second. If your dad tried to hired a hit man to kill your mom, would you say she probably deserved it? How would that be different? What if that happened and everyone on the internet was saying that your mom probably deserved it, how would that make you feel? You may sit back and say “Well that would be different, I know my mom, I live with my mom she wouldn’t do anything to make someone want to kill her. The Moral is that you don’t know Tim, you only know what you see and hear onstage, in the albums and in the interviews. You don’t live with his wife, you don’t know his wife, and you don’t know what went on therefore no one has any business saying this that or the other thing if they weren’t there and have no idea. The people saying she probably deserved it are just upset fans that are pissed off that they wont be hearing any new material anytime soon and can’t go see their favorite band play. Well guess what people, it happened it is what it is, time to SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!
